Is it better to declare bankruptcy or just not pay the bills? - I had a very good job up until last December (2008), when I was suddenly laid off with no prior warning. I was able to find a new job in March (2009), however the new job pays 25% less than the old one. When I told my boyfriend I wanted to declare bankruptcy he started yelling at me and saying that was a stupid thing to do since that ruins your credit for a really long time, plus I would have to pay an attorney to file. He said that I should just not pay my bills, and that as soon as I started not paying the credit card co's would be swarming all over me offering me deals (something that would NOT happen were I to call them in advance to let them know that I could no longer pay them).
