Hunters are exposed to all kinds of hazards in the woods. A 31-year-old man in Missouri, Curtis Powelson was killed in a tragic and odd accident while searching for a deer.

Powelson had been bow hunting near his home in Waynesville when he reportedly fell into a sinkhole which was about 70 feet deep. The incident occurred on a recent Monday around dusk.

Powelson had contacted his wife right before the accident, to tell her that he had shot a deer and was going deep into the woods to track the animal. However he didn’t return home, so his spouse contacted local law enforcement authorities.

Emergency crews frantically searched and eventually discovered the sinkhole along with the man’s body. Investigators believe the sinkhole opened sometimes last month due to heavy rain storms.

Powelson most likely didn’t see the opening because it was dark when he went looking for the deer and the sinkhole was situated behind foliage. Powelson was an active duty U.S. Marine stationed at Fort Leonard Wood.

His death has been ruled as accidental.
