Turkey hostage situation: Prosecutor dies from wounds, two gunmen killed in firefight

An Istanbul prosecutor died after being shot by members of a far-left Turkish group in a hostage siege on Tuesday.

The siege began when two members of the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front disguised as lawyers entered the Caglayan district courthouse on Tuesday, according to CNN.

Witnesses told Reuters that one of the men fired a gun three times and also claimed to have explosives as they entered the prosecutor’s office.

Turkish police negotiated with the gunmen for six hours but eventually decided to storm the office, BBC reported.

Prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz was shot three times in the head and twice in the body before the Turkish security forces entered the room, according to Reuters. The two gunmen were killed in the gunfight.

The Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front said the gunmen were seeking to avenge the death of 15-year-old Berkin Elvan, who died after being injured during the anti-government Gezi Park protests in June 2013.
