About the Jazz Guitarist's Signature Series: Each lesson explores the improvisational style of an influential artist within the history of jazz guitar. This is done through a short transcribed phrase, most likely played over a reoccurring harmonic cadence (eg. II-V-I).

About Tal Farlow: Born in Greensboro, North Carolina on June 7, 1921, he was encouraged to play the guitar by his father as a kid but didn't take it up seriously until age 21. Farlow's reputation as a great bebop guitarist began to grow upon joining vibraphonist Red Norvo's Trio in 1949. After a short stint with Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five in 1953, Farlow began his own group featuring pianist Eddie Costa and in the decade that followed recorded close to a dozen albums primarily for the Norgran and Verve labels. Tired with the pressures of the music industry, in 1958 the guitarist retired from full time performing and returned to his career as a sign painter in Sea Bright, New Jersey. Farlow kept on performing and recording occasionally. In 1962 the Gibson Guitar Corporation introduced the Tal Farlow model in homage to his artistry.

Tal Farlow died of cancer in New York City on July 25, 1998 at the age of 77.
