About the Jazz Guitarist's Signature Series: Each lesson checks out the improvisational style of an influential artist within the history of jazz guitar. This is done with a brief transcribed solo, most likely executed over a reoccurring harmonic cadence (eg. II-V-I).

About Tal Farlow: Born in Greensboro, North Carolina on June 7, 1921, he was motivated to play the guitar by his dad as a kid but didn't take it up seriously until age 21. Farlow's credibility as a great bebop guitar player began to expand upon signing up with vibraphonist Red Norvo's Trio in 1949. After a brief stint with Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five in 1953, Farlow began his own group featuring pianist Eddie Costa and in the decade that followed recorded near lots of albums mostly for the Norgran and Verve labels. Tired with the pressures of the music industry, in 1958 the guitar player relinquished full-time performing and returned to his career as a sign painter in Sea Bright, New Jersey. Farlow kept on playing and recording occasionally. In 1962 the Gibson Guitar Corporation introduced the Tal Farlow model in homage to his artistry.

Tal Farlow passed away of cancer in New York City on July 25, 1998 at the age of 77.
