An earthquake, with a magnitude of up to 6.9, has struck New Zealand.

The tremor, which lasted for around a minute, sent office workers running for cover.

Trains were brought to a halt in Wellington and some damage was reported at the parliament building.

The epicentre was in the Cook Strait - around 60 kilometres south of the capital.
