installing a 6" lift kit on my yamaha golf cart
Category
🚗
MotorTranscript
00:00Alright, we got some parts in for the golf cart.
00:04It is a lift kit.
00:12Parts used up. Here's
00:16all the parts in it. This is a
00:206 inch lift kit.
00:24It's going on this thing.
00:30So, let's get things sorted
00:34up and let's get that installed.
00:38Alright, got everything
00:42unpacked.
00:46This is the part for the back.
00:50This raises the back up. Here's part
00:54of the sway bar
00:58bracket. I believe
01:00that's part of that also.
01:02Got the left
01:04and right A arms.
01:06They already have
01:08new bushings pushed in them.
01:10They came with these new
01:12bushings
01:14that go in here for the
01:16kingpins.
01:18Got both of those.
01:20These are
01:22the
01:24risers for the
01:26steering linkage.
01:28That way you get
01:30the extra
01:32geometry or whatever.
01:34And a bag of bolts.
01:36So,
01:40according to the
01:42instructions,
01:44it says for the
01:46to put the rear on
01:48it
01:50you need to take off the back
01:52of the body.
01:54which I really
01:58don't want to do
02:00because I'm going to have to
02:01remove the roof.
02:02All of that.
02:04Just to, and
02:06the reason they want
02:08is because it's easier to
02:10get to the
02:12bolt right there for the shock.
02:14Which is just right there.
02:16I'm pretty sure I can
02:18leave the body on
02:19and get to that.
02:20And the same for
02:22this side.
02:24And I put that
02:26bar in there.
02:28So I'm just going to
02:30leave the body on
02:31and try it that way.
02:32If I can't do it,
02:34well then I'll have to
02:35take the body off.
02:37So I'm going to get
02:39the jack set up.
02:41And
02:43we'll turn to the
02:45rear part first.
02:47I've got the
02:48nuts loose
02:49on the top of
02:50the shocks.
02:52Which they are
02:54what size?
02:5514mm for the
02:57two top ones.
02:58And
03:00down here
03:02on the
03:03sway bar
03:05you've got to
03:06take this loose
03:07from the bracket.
03:08That's a
03:0917mm.
03:10And
03:12I believe
03:13you reuse
03:14this
03:17bolt
03:18for the
03:19new one.
03:20But anyway
03:22I got that
03:24done.
03:25Now
03:26I need to
03:27get a jack
03:29under there
03:30and raise the
03:31back up
03:32and pull the
03:33bolts out
03:34from
03:35the shocks
03:36so I can get
03:37that other bracket
03:38put in there.
03:39there.
03:40Alright.
03:41Yes.
03:42You can
03:44put that
03:45on
03:46with the
03:47body still
03:48on here.
03:49I was
03:50able to.
03:51Your
03:52bolts
03:53in there.
03:54Your shock
03:55bolts
03:56down there.
03:57Same on both
03:58sides.
03:59If this
04:00panel
04:01wasn't
04:02able to come
04:03off of here
04:04it would be
04:05impossible to get
04:06on.
04:07So be sure you
04:08take your panel
04:09off.
04:10And you'll
04:11have to fight
04:12with it some.
04:13But it will
04:14go.
04:15You see
04:16there's the
04:17shock
04:18come down
04:19to the stock
04:20place.
04:21The only thing
04:22that concerns me
04:23is the
04:24muffler
04:25does not
04:26have
04:27very much
04:28room.
04:29I'll have to
04:33just drive it
04:34and see if it
04:35bottoms out
04:36on that.
04:37If it does
04:39I'll have to
04:40do something
04:41different.
04:42But anyway
04:43now I've got
04:44this
04:45sway bar
04:46bracket
04:47that bolts
04:48onto here.
04:49I've got to
04:50get that
04:51put on.
04:52Here's some
04:53wires
04:54for the lights
04:55I'll just
04:56zip tie those
04:57up someplace.
04:58And then
05:00the
05:01back will be
05:02done.
05:03Except for maybe
05:04the
05:05muffler clearance.
05:07But we'll see
05:08what happens.
05:11Sway bar
05:12bracket
05:13is installed.
05:17This other
05:18little bracket
05:19right here
05:20bolts on
05:21to extend
05:22over to the
05:23frame.
05:24I did have to
05:25drill this hole.
05:26That's because
05:27up here
05:28you're supposed
05:29to take this
05:30screw out.
05:31There's two of
05:32them.
05:33Take this
05:34screw out
05:35and then
05:36enlarge this
05:37hole
05:38and then you can
05:39put this bolt
05:40through there.
05:41And it's got
05:42another little
05:43hole right here
05:44to put this
05:45one.
05:46However
05:47this screw
05:49must have
05:50a nut
05:52that's welded
05:53inside the frame.
05:54this thing
05:55was just
05:56spinning around.
05:57It wouldn't come
05:58loose.
05:59So
06:00I just drilled
06:01another hole
06:02to put this
06:03bolt through.
06:04And it works.
06:06Nice and solid.
06:10I just got to
06:11zip tie the
06:13wire up there.
06:14Put the
06:15tires on the
06:16back.
06:17and the
06:18back will be
06:19done.
06:20Except for
06:21maybe the
06:22clearance on
06:23the
06:24muffler.
06:25Alright
06:26the back tires
06:27are on.
06:28Lots of room.
06:30These inner
06:31fenders might
06:32rub.
06:33I might have to
06:34take a heat gun
06:35and heat them
06:36and bend them
06:37back in there.
06:38But anyway.
06:46There's
06:48the
06:49back.
06:50Now
06:51to get
06:52the front.
06:56Alright
06:57I got her
06:58jacked up.
06:59Get the tires
07:00off.
07:01According to
07:02the instructions
07:03the
07:04front bumper
07:05needs to
07:06come off.
07:07and the
07:09next thing
07:10we've got to
07:11do
07:12take the
07:13little cotter
07:14pins
07:15out of
07:17the
07:20bolts
07:21here.
07:35Those are
07:36four bolts
07:37that
07:38are
07:39out.
07:40Take the
07:41four bolts
07:42to hold
07:43the A-arm
07:44on.
07:45Take the
07:46bottom of
07:47the shock
07:48off.
07:49And
07:50there's
07:51two bolts
07:52for the
07:53steering arm.
07:54Do
07:55all of that
07:56for each side.
07:57and
07:58they are
07:5914mm
08:00for
08:01all of them.
08:02all of them.
08:03to
08:09the
08:10to
08:15any
08:17there
08:19is
08:20one
08:21one
08:23one
08:25two
08:25fifty
08:26one
08:27one
08:28two
08:29and
08:30one
08:31and
08:32Before I pull that out, I'm going to get the kingpin off of there, let's see if I can get
08:56this to see better what's going on. There's a drift pin right there, you've got to knock
09:03that out and then you pull this down out the way.
09:08Take your pin and, let's see, I need something a little bit longer.
09:31A little drift pin. You want to keep this because you've got to reuse it.
09:47And this is supposed to wiggle around and come out of here, which probably won't happen.
10:10Let me work on it, see if I can get it loose.
10:21I think it would be easier if I just go ahead and remove this and set it up there on the workbench and the vise.
10:28So...
10:57I believe we've got to reuse these bolts also.
11:03I don't think the kit...
11:07No, maybe they didn't.
11:14Anyway, there's one side.
11:18I just got to do the same thing to the other side and get these kingpins swapped over.
11:26Well, I got one side done.
11:30And let me tell you, it was not a direct bolt-on thing.
11:36Getting these put in, I had to spread the bracket.
11:42Spread it open just a little bit to get it to fit in there, then it fit.
11:47Getting these, the kingpin on here, those new bushings that come with it.
11:55The pin that goes through these bushings are too small so I had to take a dremel and ream it out just a little bit to get it to go.
12:05But then I got it.
12:07Which I'll show you on the other one.
12:09I still got to do the other side yet.
12:11I got the steering riser pittier bolts.
12:15It's all on.
12:17And direction says to put this in the second from the top hole to start with.
12:26That does your, whatever that is, camber or caster, whatever it is.
12:31If the tires are leaning too much, move it to a different hole.
12:35That'll adjust it some.
12:37But they said to start with that one.
12:39Which is second from the top.
12:43So that's what I'm going to do.
12:45So let's go get the other side.
12:49Get the kingpin pushed out of that one.
12:57And get it transferred over to that.
13:01Alright.
13:09These have a rubber washer type sealer thing on them.
13:15I guess you don't reuse these.
13:19Try it off of here.
13:37Easier to set them done.
13:39There.
13:41And let's see, I've already got the drift pin pulled out.
13:47Pulled out of there.
13:50The other one, I had to use a pipe wrench to get it to break loose.
13:57I had a little pin in there.
13:59You're supposed to be able to turn it.
14:00Well, it just kept bending because it was rusted up.
14:03So the other side, I used a pipe wrench to break it loose.
14:08So this side is probably going to have to be the same way.
14:12If I can get it to grab.
14:16Spin it around a few times.
14:22It loosens it up.
14:26Then you can try prying it.
14:30As you're moving it.
14:31As you're moving it.
14:36As you're going to catch this washer.
14:37It's a super little bit.
14:38It's just a !
14:39Foil.
14:40As you're going to be good enough.
14:41So I can get it out for each of my comfortable whenever you can leave it.
14:42Try prying it as you're moving it.
15:03As you can catch this washer, it's a spacer.
15:08It's a little, where's it at? There it is.
15:14A little spacer.
15:23And then it'll come out.
15:26There you go.
15:32The bushings from the factory are just plastic and
15:37they just fall apart.
15:46That's all it is.
15:50Alright.
15:54There's the old one.
15:56Now this is how I press in the bushings.
16:09Take a piece of threaded rod.
16:16This net's got a nice big fat washer on it so I'll
16:21don't worry about that but there's one for the other one.
16:25Fit it up through there.
16:28And then when you spread the nuts out it'll push the
16:44push the
16:50brushing in.
16:53There's a lot of them.
16:56Now that's what I'm doing.
16:58Now I'm using this knot now.
16:59Yeah.
17:00This has been written front, wait.
17:01Go for it.
17:02And I'm using this knot.
17:03I've got to do a little bit.
17:04Let's start.
17:06And here's what I like.
17:07To do a little bit, I need to add the knuckle.
17:08Let's use the knot.
17:09Maybe it's a little bit.
17:10Let's start it out.
17:11I'm using this knot.
17:12I've got our knife.
17:13If you go around and use this knot.
17:14Push your tulip bottoms up.
17:43Then you take your other one, line it up so,
18:12it's done screw it.
18:41There you go.
18:46Now, like I said, these bushings are just a little bit too small for this.
18:53It won't fit.
18:57So, I take my Dremel with a, where's it at, sanding.
19:05Just ream it around in there until you ream it out enough to where this pin will slide
19:11through nice and easy with maybe just a little bit of play in it.
19:18So, that's the next thing to do.
19:21There you go.
19:22There you go.
19:26You just got to keep doing that until the pin will slide in.
19:45So, that's all there is to it to do both of these.
19:58I'll bring it back when I'm going to get it done.
20:01It doesn't take very much.
20:04Just enough to give it a little more clearance.
20:08You got to do the, the top one.
20:15Alright, got that one to slide through now.
20:21Got to put in there.
20:27Got the little drift pin drove in.
20:31Got the little washer up there.
20:35Now, I'll just get this cap.
20:41Which it fits.
20:44A little loose.
20:46I'm going to take my heat gun like I did with the other one.
20:49Just kind of heat it up and this will shrink down and cover that up.
20:52That way all the grease inside there don't get washed out.
20:56Alright, that side's put on.
21:02It went on pretty easy.
21:05It went on easier than the other side because I already had spread it out just a little bit.
21:10Got it on second hole.
21:14Spacers.
21:15I forgot to tell you when you put these spacers on.
21:18They've got a little cut out.
21:20Spot right there.
21:21That faces the knuckle.
21:24That way it's got room to turn.
21:27But all it's left to do is put the tires on.
21:31And then check for toe in.
21:36Which I'll be showing you how to do that.
21:43On here.
21:44But as you can see.
21:46The tire is leaning inwards at the top than it is the bottom.
21:52And it's the same with this.
21:55So what I'm going to do.
22:00I'm going to move the shock bolt to the top.
22:07That's when I push it down.
22:09Which is going to make it a little more straight up and down instead of angled like that.
22:16And if it's still angled like that.
22:18Well that's.
22:19I won't be able to adjust it anymore.
22:24Unless I weld something.
22:26Weld some metal on here and make another hole.
22:29But we'll see what happens with just moving it the first time.
22:35So let me get that done and let's see what happens.
22:38Okay I got both of them moved to the top holes.
22:45However now.
22:47The top is kind of leaning outwards.
22:51But I think.
22:53Once you get people sitting on it.
22:56It'll kind of squash them down and then they'll be straight.
23:00But anyway.
23:02I'm going to leave it like that.
23:05And now I'm going to check the.
23:07The toe in.
23:09And.
23:10That will also help.
23:12With some of that.
23:13From what I've read.
23:14But let me get this set up and I'll show you how I check the toe.
23:19Okay this is how I always check them.
23:22I know other people do it different ways.
23:25But.
23:26This seems to work for me.
23:28I just take my jack stands and stick them out here in front of the.
23:33Cart.
23:34And I attach a string.
23:37Kind of tight.
23:39And you want to go off of the back tires.
23:43Put them.
23:44In the middle.
23:46And then.
23:48You move.
23:49Your jack stands.
23:50Back and forth.
23:52Till the front part of the.
23:54The tire.
23:55The string just barely touches.
23:57Is.
23:58So now you know.
23:59That this string.
24:00Is.
24:01As straight as you can get it.
24:04Going forward.
24:05Then you come over here to the.
24:06Other side.
24:07Do the same thing.
24:08Try to.
24:09Just try to make it as.
24:10Straight as you can.
24:11This looks like it needs to.
24:12Come out.
24:13Just a little more.
24:14Like that.
24:15Alright.
24:16Of course.
24:17This isn't going to be 100% accurate.
24:18Because it's not hooked up to laser or anything.
24:19But then what you do.
24:20As you can see.
24:21As you can see from the string.
24:23This tire has a lot of tow in.
24:24Because the back is closer.
24:25To the back.
24:26To the back.
24:27To the back.
24:28To the back.
24:29To the back.
24:30To the back.
24:31And.
24:32And.
24:33and.
24:34This tire is the same way.
24:35to the back.
24:36Alright.
24:37Of course.
24:38This isn't going to be 100% accurate.
24:40Because it's not hooked up.
24:41To the laser or anything.
24:43And.
24:44To the back.
24:45To the back.
24:46Then what you do.
24:47So you can see.
24:48This tire has a lot of tow in.
24:52Because the back is closer to the string.
24:55The front.
24:56And.
24:58This tire is the sameze.
25:02so you adjust your
25:05tie rods back there to where
25:08the edge is the same distance
25:13and then I believe toe in should be like an eighth of an inch
25:18in so the front of your tire
25:22will be about an eighth of an inch
25:25farther away than what the back is
25:29an eighth to a sixteenth
25:32I believe is what they said so let me get those
25:36tie rod ends loosened up and
25:41get the tires adjusted and we'll see what happens
25:44and I forgot to add
25:47make sure your steering wheel is straight
25:51because if this is turned
25:55your tires are going to be turned also so make sure your steering wheel
25:59straight before you start adjusting
26:02your tie rod ends
26:07and something else you can do to keep the steering wheel straight if you're doing it by yourself
26:13just tie it up to the thing
26:16keep it from moving
26:20all right I got them
26:23adjusted out
26:26this one is about
26:29three sixteenths
26:31away from the string than what the back is
26:34this side
26:38they're right on exactly the same
26:41and the reason this one is
26:44because I ran out of room
26:46on the tie rods
26:49for the threads
26:50they won't go any further
26:52that's as far as I can adjust it
26:53so
26:55I'm going to try to
27:01let that be good
27:04so now I'm going to adjust
27:06or measure the toe in
27:08between the two tires
27:10and the way I do that
27:11is I just take
27:12two pieces of wood
27:16put them together
27:17and clamp them
27:19and you can slide these back and forth
27:21to get an accurate measurement
27:24what I like to do
27:26is
27:27instead of just using the tape measure
27:29it's hard to measure off of the rim
27:32to be good
27:33I don't like measuring from the tread of the tire
27:35because
27:36these can be
27:39what I want to say
27:42they're not exactly the same
27:44there might be some differences
27:47because if you happen to measure off of
27:51the tip of one
27:52but then you measure off the
27:54forget about it
27:55and you measure off the tip of this
27:57well see that's
27:58there's a difference there
27:59so
28:00by going by the edge of the rim
28:03it's going to be a lot more accurate
28:07and go for the center of it
28:11and just push it against the
28:15the rim
28:18clamp it together
28:21to hold it
28:22and then
28:24measure how long
28:27what the different distance is
28:28the front is
28:3327
28:3716th
28:40below 3 quarters
28:42so that'd be
28:4327 and 11 sixteenths
28:46on the
28:47what the front is
28:50let's see what the back is
28:56put it out in the middle
29:02and the same for this
29:05in the middle
29:11push it over to where the touch
29:15clamp it together
29:18and be careful when you bring it out
29:19so you don't
29:20move it around any
29:22and this is
29:3227 and 3 quarters
29:34so I'm a 16th of an inch
29:36on the toe end
29:38which I read anywhere from
29:41sixteenth to an eighth of an inch
29:43is
29:44where it's supposed to be
29:47so I'm going to leave it like it is
29:50I'm going to tighten up the
29:52the jam nuts
29:55on the
29:56tie rod ends
30:00there the nut on each end
30:02just tighten those up so the
30:03bar in the center don't move
30:05and then I'll recheck everything again
30:08make sure nothing has changed
30:11alright I got the
30:14lock nuts tightened up on there
30:17I done rechecked everything
30:18the toe end
30:19a sixteenth
30:21of toe end
30:23the measurement from the string
30:26on both sides is exactly the same
30:28they didn't change
30:29and
30:32the steering wheel
30:34is still locked
30:37forward
30:38so
30:40I guess the only thing I have to do is take it for a drive
30:44and
30:45see how it handles
30:47as
30:57I
30:58do
31:02you
31:11do
32:42Oh, it's coming back right here.
32:52Alright.
32:53Well, it does seem to dry pretty good.
32:57I do notice, like I said, these were rubbing.
33:03You can see right there where it is rubbing.
33:06And this side also.
33:10So I'll just take the heat gun and see if I can heat this plastic up and push it over that way farther.
33:20Maybe secure this up a little higher.
33:24I did not hear the muffler hitting that bracket.
33:27Of course, I really wasn't bouncing over anything really hard, so I'll keep an eye on that.
33:35The steering is nice and tight and it's straight.
33:42So, that looks a lot better than the stock.
33:48I do have the stock hubcaps.
33:51They're made for 8 inch.
33:53These are 10 inch rims.
33:54I think I can get them to snap in on this round.
33:58Just to hold them in there.
34:00Make it look a little bit better than what they are.
34:04But anyway, and the engine is not smoking as much as what it was.
34:13I think that valve stem seal has finally started doing its job.
34:19I need to power wash all that dirt off of there now that I can see it.
34:25And I'll get this cover put back on.
34:31But anyway, there it is.
34:36I'm not sure if I'll be repainting it or not.
34:42But if I do, I'll put a video of that part.
34:46But there we go.
34:50Alright.
