00:00They're running around cancelling their lunch or trying to quickly get a sandwich before the car comes back in because they know their brake is gone.
00:06Anyway, right, here we come, turn nine, the left-hander goes in and then just got a snap.
00:14It sounded like the car bought him now, but he could have bailed out of it.
00:18He'd understeered wide onto the gravel and he looks like he tried to stick with it.
00:24And, yeah, there, he's had a snap.
00:28He's gone off wide, but there's a point there where I wonder.
00:33It got on the grass.
00:34Yeah, when it got off the gravel onto the grass, that's when it spun him around.
00:37But, see, here, I don't know if there's a way.
00:41He's on the brace.
00:42You can see the front wheel is locked up and there, it snaps sideways.
00:46Then you get the pendulum effect and that sends him off wide.
00:50But there would have been a point, perhaps.
00:54Are you OK, Oli?
00:56Yeah, I'm sorry.
00:58It's OK, Oli.
00:58The car is safe.
00:59I'm sure you're OK.
01:01There would have been a point when he had that mid-corner snap of oversteer
01:05and it was starting to run wide where he might have been able to bail out of that, I think.
01:10Yeah, 17-2.
01:11Alpen has come across the line to slightly improve his lap time as well.
01:17So, a 17-7 for the tied up.
01:22Ooh, put a car off.
01:23George Russell.
01:25Turn four.
01:26Yeah.
01:26That's an odd place to see a car off.
01:30What's happening there?
01:31Is he had a problem?
01:36Yeah.
01:36It's a left-hander after a short strike.
01:39All right, so we'll have a look and see.
01:41Russell looks like the front wing's OK.
01:43I think he's got away with that and we'll have a look.
01:46Here's the replay.
01:49So, coming up to the right-hander of turn three and goes in.
01:58What's happening here?
01:59Ooh, he just touched the grass on the right-hand side.
02:02Tip the grass.
02:03Lost all grip.
02:04Yeah.
02:05And, yeah, you'll see it from the off-board there.
02:09It is tricky because your eye line is left.
02:11You're looking at the apex of the left-hander.
02:15You OK?
02:17Did I drop a wheel?
02:19Yes, we think he did.
02:20That's quite funny.
02:21It's interesting you have to ask that as a driver in the car, though, at that moment.
02:24Well, it's just caught him off guard, doesn't it?
02:26It's just surprised him that it's happened there.
02:28And that's what he's got to work on today.
02:31Just that knowledge, the confidence in the car that you can just release the brake pedal.
02:37It's often how you come off the brake pedal as much as how you go on it in a racing car.
02:42And that's always been the case whatever you're driving.
02:45We've got a car off already.
02:46Oh, Oli Behrman, what have you done already?
02:49This is not what Oli Behrman wanted, needed, or would have thought about before this session.
02:57We've got a red flag.
02:59He is stuck in the gravel down at turn 11.
03:02I don't even think he was on a fast lap.
03:05His first fast lap, he'd gone through two sectors, and he's off into the gravel.
03:10And, Martin, that could be the end of his session, because that car's beached.
03:14Let's have a look and see if that is indeed the case.
03:17He's come out of 10, just sweeping through this nothing-y sort of zone.
03:21And then...
03:22Yes, definitely.
03:25Yeah, he was a long way, wasn't he?
03:26A long way over, actually.
03:27And, unfortunately, what happens then, as soon as you try to drive out, you dig little
03:34holes in the gravel, because all the way to the car is on the floor, the massive area
03:39of the floor underneath the car, and you will be beached very easily, indeed.
03:45Cars two kilograms heavier this year.
03:48He's a long way.
03:49Yeah, he was a long way over, wasn't he?
03:51A long way over, yeah.
03:51So, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, alongside each other on the front row, at a team who
03:57say their drivers are free to race and race each other, but how much caution has to go
04:02with that on a day like today?
04:04They'll just be told, you must not run into each other.
04:07Oh, we got somebody off already.
04:09We have already one of the racing bulls, and that is Isaac Hadja, who looks like he's trying
04:15to get the car into gear, at the very least.
04:18He's got a broken rear wing, I think.
04:20He has.
04:20Look, look at the angle of that rear wing.
04:23It's at 45 degrees, if my mass is correct, and that is down at turn two.
04:28That might delay the start.
04:29That's almost certainly going to delay the start, isn't it?
04:32Right, so he backs off to then floor it, to put some heat into his tyres, and this is
04:38not a day to be doing that.
04:40He was a bit unlucky there.
04:42Sort of anti-locked on him, and that just lit the rear up, didn't it?
04:45I think that wing change that they put on his car in Park Fermi-Crofty...
04:50Oh, Ted, Fernando Alonso spinning round and hitting the wall!
04:54You can see him there, coming to grief, Fernando Alonso, just out of turn seven, and that's
05:01going to be at least a safety car.
05:03Just go a bit more, get a better temperature on a dry track, so a lot of conversation going
05:07on about that.
05:09It will sort itself out, but the group is split-crofty.
05:12The leaders at turn four, and the likes of Tsunoda, Albon, and Hamilton, all the way at the
05:17back of the track at turn nine.
05:19Put it this way, it's going to take a while for them all to join together, but it's going
05:22to take a while to clear the debris, so through turn five and six, and he got on the kerb,
05:29and that was the end of the Fudum.
05:34He didn't hit the wall as hard as I thought he might, and crashed it going off there.
05:38So, yeah, he would have been surprised by that as well, you know, because it wasn't
05:44off the track.
05:45It just, it just, just touched the gravel, didn't it?
05:49It loosened the car off.
05:52Yeah.
05:53I'll tell you what, Martin, two laps ago, that could have been Oscar Piastro.
05:58Yeah.
05:59You had that moment when he got on, just dipped into the gravel, through exactly the same
06:04corner.
06:04Doesn't say much, does it?
06:09He barely touched the gravel, did he?
06:11It just, it's just let go on, he's found something in there, the kerb, the line, a bit
06:18of gravel, or any combination thereof, and it sent the car around.
06:22Of the track as well, so you cheat wherever you can get away with it, basically, and now
06:28the system works well, and much better now for track limits in Formula One, doesn't it?
06:31With that blue line, really defining what is the edge of the white line.
06:37And that is Esteban Ocon in the Haas.
06:40And, well, I'm surprised, we've got a red flag, which doesn't surprise me.
06:45We had a double-waved yellow.
06:47I'm OK, says Esteban.
06:48That's great to see.
06:49We had a double-waved yellow that briefly went green again.
06:52But there's no way it should have gone green, because Ocon, at Turn 3, on the exit of Turn
06:583, has rather heavily gone into the barriers.
07:02And this compromises anybody out on a lap, of course, because they've effectively wasted
07:06that set of tyres.
07:08And even if you're on the out lap, you still take a bit of life.
07:11That is a very high-speed accident.
07:14Yeah.
07:14That's a lot of damage.
07:15That would have been...
07:17He wouldn't have slowed down very much at all before he whacked that at what looks like
07:21a rather nasty angle.
07:23Taking his time getting out of the car, his radio is ready to say, I'm OK.
07:28So let's have a little look now.
07:30Down into Turn 1 we go.
07:33That looks perfect.
07:35So it's under acceleration here.
07:37Yeah.
07:40Yeah.
07:40Kind of pretty much, as I said, isn't it?
07:42It gets out of shape, gets a tank slapper on.
07:45You then start trying to steer into the slide.
07:50And luckily, it's a big old impact, isn't it?
07:54Yeah.
07:56Are you OK?
07:57Yeah, I'm OK.
07:58Sorry.
07:58I'm really sorry, guys.
08:00It's OK.
08:01You're OK, so that's good.
08:02It's not as big as Doohan's in Australia last week, but we were talking, weren't we, about
08:09how Westerbann has to sort of fold himself into these cockpits.
08:13The Astri then almost had to correct a little bit of a slide.
08:17Now we've got to pick a breaking point, turn in late, pick up the throttle, hit the throttle
08:23hard, and that was a hit against the wall, was it not?
08:26I think it was, and we've got a double yellow being waved for Lando Norris and a red flag,
08:31and that is a bigger hit against the wall than his teammate Oscar Piastri, and Piastri
08:37got across the line to recall that time of a 1.27.5 before the red flag, we believe.
08:45Let's see.
08:45So this is turn three.
08:46Let's see where it went wrong.
08:53It's a lot of damage as well.
08:56He hit the throttle really hard, and it took a bit of a swap, and boom, before you know
09:04it, he would have, the car would have been in the wall before Lando even realised.
09:10So this is where he hit the throttle too hard.
09:12It jumped over the kerb, and it's landed off the kerb, and he's got some corrective steering
09:18lock to the left.
09:20Lando, are you OK?
09:22Yeah, I'm good.
09:22Don't worry about it, mate.
09:28Got a yellow flag.
09:29Yeah.
09:30Is it Yuki Tsunoda?
09:32Yes, it is Yuki Tsunoda.
09:34And as you can see, Yuki Tsunoda, out of the final corner, has hit the wall, and we've
09:39got a red flag.
09:41And radioing first and foremost to say I'm OK, which is first and foremost what we want
09:47to hear.
09:47But he's gone in quite hard there, and you can see how the front wing is lying, strewn
09:54quite a long way away from the car, in the middle of the track.
09:58So, and you can see the tyre tracks there.
10:02Looks like he's lost it quite early on power, actually.
10:04Yeah.
10:05And he's just done two ends straight into the barrier.
10:07And also, you know, I don't think they're going to restart this session, are they?
10:11Maybe for the practice start to the end.
10:13I think we're going to struggle together.
10:14Seven minutes to get everything cleared away.
10:16Yeah, that's pretty tight.
10:17Let's have a little look.
10:18Medical cars arrived, and Yuki's already walking away towards the pits.
10:23So, in we go.
10:25No, he touched the inside.
10:26He did a Lando Norris.
10:28Oh, dear.
10:29Oh, Yuki.
10:30And it...
10:32That's the sort of basic lapse in concentration side pairer?
10:39It's the more...
10:40It's the one where you're more annoyed.
10:41Like, the car's rotated, clearly, much more than he was expecting.
10:45He just...
10:45He kind of did the steering in two stages, didn't he?
10:47He turned in and then wound on the lock.
10:49And almost didn't expect the front to bite and rotate, and that took him into the inside wall.
10:56That is a big penalty, though, for a small initial brush of the wall.
11:00Yeah.
11:01It's lights out, and away we go.
11:02And it wasn't held for long.
11:04And Piastri gets a really good start.
11:06He's going wheel to wheel with Verstappen.
11:08Piastri almost edging into the lead.
11:10Verstappen goes off the track and keeps the lead of this race from Oscar Piastri.
11:15And there's Antonelli going a little bit wide in the Mercedes.
11:18George Russell in third place.
11:20Then Charles Leclerc.
11:21Then Antonelli.
11:21Then Hamilton has made a very good start.
11:23Carlos Sainz has had a bad one.
11:24And there is Yuki Sonoda and Pierre Gasly.
11:27And we're going to have a safety car even before the end of the first lap,
11:31because there's two cars into the wall.
11:34But what about that start from Max Verstappen?
11:36Alex Albon's made up a couple of places.
11:38Lando Norris has made up two places, too.
11:41And we can see what happened now with Yuki Sonoda.
11:43There's the Alpine on the right-hand side.
11:46And it was front wheel against rear wheel.
11:47And there just wasn't enough space.
11:49That's really a pretty typical first lap incident, I'm afraid.
11:55You can't really say anybody was doing anything wrong or wild.
11:58And nobody was locked up.
12:01See, the back end sliding as well through there.
12:05But to be honest, Lando Norris has just put in the fastest middle sector.
12:10And that is Oli Behrman.
12:12Now, he has hit the wall, I think.
12:14How hard?
12:15I'm not quite sure.
12:16But we've got a red flag.
12:18And that is the end of this session.
12:20With four and a half minutes to go,
12:22I don't think that we're going to get any more running in.
12:24And you can see the scuff marks on the right-hand side.
12:27Yeah, he's facing the wrong way in turn 12.
12:29Yeah.
12:29Sure.
12:31Here we go, then.
12:32On the run down towards the heavy braking zone.
12:35It's a 10.
12:35Wide on the entry.
12:36Yeah, a little bit wide there.
12:37And then on power, it's one of those horrible, lazy spins
12:41where it kind of pathetically goes round
12:43and there's nothing you can do to stop it.
12:45But such is the inertia of these heavy cars these days.
12:48And because he's offline,
12:49he's probably got a lot of dirt on his tyres.
12:51Hit quite hard, didn't he?
12:51Oh, my God.
12:54Sorry.
12:55It's okay.
12:55Are you okay?
12:57Yeah, I'm fine.
12:59I'm sorry.
13:00Sliding in that red bull,
13:01but we know how hard they work overnight.
13:04Back in Milton Keynes, in the simulator,
13:06constantly putting the work in.
13:07Max Verstappen, a two-time pole sitter
13:09around this circuit.
13:11At the moment,
13:12just hoping to cruise through into Q2.
13:14And he's up in sector one.
13:16Yeah, so last year,
13:16just as a reference for those of you
13:18who can't remember the lap times from last year,
13:2014.7 was Max's fastest time.
13:24Big crash for Yuki Tsunoda,
13:26who finds the wall.
13:28And that is a huge amount of contact.
13:31That's coming out of turn six.
13:33So I wonder what's happened there.
13:35He maybe lost the car on the left-hand part
13:38because it's the right rear
13:39that's taken the brunt of the damage,
13:40but that's been a huge off.
13:42Glad to see these walked away okay from that one.
13:46Yeah, looking back at the car as well,
13:48seeing the damage that he's done,
13:49but always good to see a driver walking away.
13:52Here we go, then.
13:52We're going to get a look at this, Ant.
13:55So the car's bottoming quite heavily on turning,
13:57and it was over that curb.
13:59Took a lot of it.
14:01Did he go upside down?
14:02We'll get the off-camera look.
14:05Did he roll?
14:06He did.
14:07Wow.
14:07It was almost reminiscent of Joe Guanyu's crash
14:09in Silverstone a couple of years ago.
14:11But the roll hoop, well, doing its job
14:14and flipping the car back around
14:15using the safety barriers as well.
14:18That is a big hit for Yuki Tsunoda,
14:21and now you really understand the extent of the damage
14:23and how it's being caused flying over the gravel.
14:26The last kind of crash you've seen like that
14:28was from Jack Doohan, wasn't it,
14:30in Suzuka when he forgot to,
14:32or didn't detach the DRS,
14:35but that's a huge off,
14:37and I'm even more glad to see him walk away from that one
14:40now I've seen the full impact.
14:42Here is Esteban Ocon across the line.
14:44Does improve, but it's not enough.
14:46There's a yellow flag out on the track.
14:4818th for Ocon,
14:49and it's the Alpine of Franco Colapinto
14:52with another heavy crash in this session.
14:57Colapinto saying he's okay on the radio,
15:01and I think that might,
15:02that's in the early part of that,
15:03is that Tamburello?
15:04Yeah, you're absolutely right, Harry.
15:07Making it through, however,
15:10won't be able to take his spots
15:12in the second part of qualifying
15:14on the way into Tamburello,
15:15and this is what awaits him.
15:18Oh, he just touched the grass, didn't he?
15:20Over the curb too much on the exit of three.
15:22And went nose in.
15:26Okay, mate, are you okay?
15:27Yeah, sorry.
15:29Are you okay, buddy?
15:30Are you okay?
15:32Yeah, sorry.
15:34That's okay, mate, as long as you're okay.
15:38And it can all go away from you
15:40in a blink of an eye,
15:41as it has done for Franco Colapinto.
15:44Round he goes,
15:45and then all he can do,
15:46once he's in the gravel,
15:47his head to the wall,
15:48didn't take his hands off the steering wheel either,
15:51so I wonder if that gave him a bit more of a jolt
15:53than I would have otherwise needed.
15:55It's almost the best possible way
15:57you can go into the barrier.
15:58As scary as it looks from inside the car
16:00when you're heading nose in,
16:02everything's working in your favor.
16:04The noses on these cars are so long.
16:06A little bit of chaos
16:07and confusion and a kerfuffle into proceedings,
16:11and we hope Karin Chandok give us
16:13some sort of strategic interest beyond lap one.
16:16That's the idea.
16:17You know, I think,
16:18first of all,
16:19I think it's really positive
16:20that the F1 community,
16:22meaning the teams,
16:24Formula One and the FIA,
16:26recognize that,
16:27you know what,
16:27the fans...
16:28Oh!
16:28Oh, he's touched the barrier.
16:29Isaac Hedger has gone into the barrier
16:31on the entry
16:32into the swimming pool chicane,
16:34and you heard the noise
16:36before you saw the car,
16:38and that is a red flag,
16:39understandably.
16:41Well, we waited about 10 minutes
16:43for the red flag in F1.
16:44We've waited seven minutes
16:46for the red flag in F2.
16:49That is a typical Monaco
16:51kind of accident, Jenson Barton,
16:53where you're just pushing,
16:55trying to find that extra little bit of margin,
16:57and you either get it right,
16:59or in that case,
17:00you get it a bit scrappy.
17:01Yeah, he did,
17:02and that's a...
17:03Oh, that's a hefty hit on the rear end.
17:05That's probably...
17:06He's so angry with himself.
17:08I mean, the biggest issue is...
17:11Should I try to bring it?
17:13Yes, yes.
17:17It's such a tricky round here,
17:19one round here, isn't it?
17:19Because you're trying to...
17:21You know, these cars are big now,
17:23and it's so difficult
17:24to not touch a wall,
17:26but the apex ones are always the worst
17:27because you bounce off it really hard.
17:31Just missed it with the front left.
17:34Didn't miss it with the rear.
17:35I think he was a bit unsettled coming in
17:37because watching him
17:38when we had the onboard camera,
17:39or the, sorry, front-facing camera,
17:41he was on the curb on the right-hand side,
17:42which you don't want to be, really,
17:44and I think that's...
17:45It's upset the car a little bit on turn,
17:47and he's just misjudged it a bit.
17:50They didn't flinch.
17:51I was just about to say that.
17:53Those marshals there did not move a muscle
17:57when Isaac Hadjar hit the barrier.
18:00Bravo.
18:01Wow.
18:02Ice in their veins.
18:03That was...
18:04That's impressive.
18:05Yeah, that was...
18:06More impressive than his car control
18:08stopped hitting the other barrier, though.
18:09Yeah, good point.
18:10Ted, down to you.
18:11Oh, yeah, so Hadjar comes in,
18:15and because the inside of the rim
18:17actually still had the tyre on,
18:20it wasn't carving out a little channel in the tarmac.
18:25Yeah, the man who was fastest in FP1.
18:27Think about it, they go fastest here in FP2.
18:29See what the last sector's like.
18:31It's all slow, pretty much.
18:33Half a second clear of Oscar Piastri.
18:36They'll be standing in the grandstands again
18:38as Oscar Piastri goes into the barrier
18:42at Sandovats,
18:44where often drivers lock up
18:47and do a little shimmy to the left
18:48to take the escape route.
18:50That didn't happen for Piastri.
18:52Second red flag of this session,
18:54and he's lost a front wing, as you can see.
18:57He's going to have to go around a whole lap
18:58without one now.
18:59He's also lost a set of tyres.
19:01As you can see,
19:01the massive flat spots on those tyres
19:03that came over.
19:04Yeah.
19:06There are...
19:07Oscar, are you OK?
19:10Uh, yes.
19:11Rip the car back very carefully.
19:13Yep.
19:16There are Monaco accidents
19:17and there are Monaco accidents,
19:18and that is a fairly atypical one, isn't it?
19:21It's such a difficult one
19:23because at one moment in time,
19:24you have to decide,
19:25do I go left down the runoff area
19:28or can I make it?
19:29And it's just a little bit too late.
19:31He was thinking about going left,
19:33but he was going in too hot.
19:34Had he continued to go left,
19:36the car would have spun round?
19:40Yeah, he would have...
19:41The point that he locked up at that stage,
19:44you're then sliding.
19:45You know, you haven't got steering anymore.
19:47You're just steering one way.
19:48So, for him to have come off the brake,
19:51he would have just had an impact at a higher speed
19:53and taken off a corner probably.
19:55So, it would have been brave to have turned left
19:57and lived there at that point.
19:58Yeah.
19:58I think there was a slight twitch to the left.
20:01It's right on board.
20:02Up by Revage we go.
20:03Massonet is the long left-hander,
20:06and then we get into Casino Square
20:08and see exactly...
20:09Oh, and that's where it started.
20:11So, it was Massonet.
20:13That was exactly where Fernando Alonso hit.
20:16I mean, I don't know what he was going to do
20:17if he did get...
20:18if he didn't crash,
20:19because he was going to crash
20:19with the cars in front.
20:22Guys, hit the wall.
20:24Damn.
20:25Sorry, guys.
20:27Yeah.
20:28But this is the problem.
20:29You're arriving at such a high speed there,
20:31on the limit,
20:31and you've got a car in front
20:32which is losing you all your downforce on entry.
20:35So, you know, it's Lewis' mistake,
20:38but, I mean, he's definitely not in a...
20:41It's not an easy situation for him at that point.
20:43I could be risky for the gearbox, I think.
20:45So, they'll change it?
20:46There's not really a very high speed here.
20:48It's where he's flat-spotted them.
20:50They're more likely,
20:51they're more prone to flat-spot again
20:53in the same place.
20:54At the back,
20:54there's a lock-up from Lance Stroll.
20:56Oli Behrman on the inside,
20:57trying to get past the Aston Martin,
20:59but he thought better of it
21:00and backed out.
21:01Didn't want to pick up any damage
21:03down the inside there.
21:04Goes Kemi Antonelli
21:05and into the barrier
21:06goes Gabriel Bortoletto.
21:08One of six rookies in this race
21:10and the Selva,
21:12he's stranded at Portier.
21:14So, we will surely have a safety car
21:16unless he can find reverse quickly
21:17and he should be able to get that car
21:19back to the pit.
21:21We've got a big, big shunt
21:22for Charles Leclerc here
21:23into the barriers
21:25down there at turn four.
21:28In fact, that's where
21:29last year's safety car came from,
21:30wasn't it?
21:30Nicolas Satifi.
21:31Yes.
21:32Fun at that very spot,
21:33but didn't hit the wall.
21:34Ended up just stalling
21:35in the middle of the track
21:36at that very same corner.
21:39Here we go.
21:40Here is the replay.
21:40So, he's coming through
21:41to turn one and two.
21:43Racing Bull stays nicely out of the way.
21:45Accelerating up the hill.
21:48Should grab the inside curb.
21:50Oh, no.
21:50He's completely locked up.
21:52Oh, and he's at the barrier
21:53on the left.
21:56Oh, wow.
21:56Just carried way,
21:58way too much speed
21:59into it
22:00and then
22:00snatch the front
22:02and then at that stage
22:02you're just a passenger
22:03sliding to earth.
22:05That's a horrible feeling
22:06because
22:06you're just sliding
22:07and sliding across the grass.
22:08You see the wall coming
22:09and there's nothing
22:10you could do at that point.
22:13Yeah.
22:16Sorry.
22:17I'm in the wall.
22:19And he's done.
22:20My bad.
22:20I've gone straight.
22:21I thought
22:22I'll just make it.
22:24I keep the wall.
22:26So, this is where
22:27Norris needs to be
22:28super tight.
22:29He's going down the inside.
22:31And catches Piastri
22:32maybe by surprise
22:33goes a bit deeper.
22:35Piastri saw him coming.
22:36He thinks he can get him
22:37on the exit
22:38and he is fractionally ahead
22:40and they've both got D'Hares
22:41and they're both going
22:43wheel to wheel
22:43and it's two McLarens
22:45powering down the back straight.
22:47Down the inside
22:47goes Oscar Piastri
22:49to hold on to that position.
22:51Wow.
22:52Lando Norris
22:53caught him by surprise.
22:54Piastri really reacted well.
22:56And he's into the grass
22:58and they have touched.
22:59The front wing has gone
23:00and Lando Norris
23:01is out of this race.
23:03And he said inevitably
23:04the two McLarens
23:05would come together
23:07at some point
23:08and that point
23:09on lap 67
23:10in Canada
23:11has arrived now.
23:12Let's go through it again.
23:14initially super move
23:15by Lando Norris
23:16down the inside.
23:18Piastri is half a car
23:19length ahead
23:19but not for long.
23:21Yeah and critically
23:21they both got DRS
23:23because Piastri still had it
23:25from the Mercedes
23:26ahead of him
23:27and that
23:28Piastri was tight
23:29into the final chicane
23:30so slow out
23:31and now Norris
23:32gets his rear wing
23:33open again.
23:34Goes left.
23:35Did they even touch?
23:38I think he went for a gap
23:39that wasn't there.
23:40Did they even touch?
23:41Potentially.
23:42Let's have a look.
23:43I think he's thought
23:44that there's a gap
23:45on the inside.
23:46I've got to do something
23:46to catch him by surprise
23:48to try and get past him.
23:49There's the gap.
23:50Oh no it's not.
23:50They did touch.
23:51He touched his front wing
23:52touched the rear tyre surface
23:54of Piastri.
23:55Are you alright dude?
23:58Yeah I'm sorry.
23:59It's all my bad.
24:01All up.
24:01All my fault.
24:03I'm lucky.
24:03Sorry.
24:05Stupid for me.
24:07Lando taking full responsibility
24:09for that incident
24:11that we can see now
24:13from Oscar's vantage point.
24:16Yeah it was his front wing
24:18touching the rear surface.
24:22So Piastri's taking
24:23the normal racing line
24:25and there was a point there
24:27where Lando's still thinking
24:29he can do it.
24:31Yeah there's not really
24:32space around there.
24:34And Lando's put his
24:35put his both hands up
24:37basically hasn't he
24:37on that one.
24:38It's all eyes to the lights
24:39and foot to the floor
24:40as we go racing in Austria
24:43and it's a good start
24:44for Lando Norris
24:45immediately coming over
24:46to the inside
24:47and balks up Leclerc
24:48who then is taken
24:50round the outside
24:51by Piastri.
24:52The McLarens lead
24:53out of turn one
24:53heading towards
24:54up hill
24:55turn three
24:56George Russell
24:56in the Mercedes
24:57also under pressure
24:58now but Piastri
24:59can he ever go
25:00on his team mate
25:01Norris defends
25:02up the hill
25:03into the right hand
25:04and lock up
25:04from George Russell
25:05he hits Max
25:06Verstappen
25:07out of the race
25:08for George Russell
25:09No it's Antonelli Harry
25:10it's Antonelli who's locked
25:13up there's Russell
25:14alongside his
25:15old team mate
25:16Lewis Hamilton
25:17and out in front though
25:18Lando Norris
25:19holding on to the lead
25:20it was Antonelli who's locked up there
25:23as the safety car
25:24unsurprisingly
25:26has been deployed
25:27so really bad news
25:30for Max Verstappen
25:31and that enormous
25:32Dutch grandstand
25:33on the inside
25:35of turn six
25:35they didn't even get to see
25:37his hero come past
25:38at racing speed
25:39once today
25:40first retirement
25:42of the season
25:43for Max Verstappen
25:45a five-time winner
25:47here and you can see
25:48the damage
25:48that's been caused
25:49Kimi Antonelli
25:50whilst the Mercedes
25:51locking up
25:52and the damage
25:53to the front left
25:54we see this happen
25:56on lap one
25:56of the Red Bull ring
25:57but to take out
25:58really the home driver
26:00as the Red Bull
26:01is hoisted up
26:02rather aggressively there
26:03straight away though
26:05Verstappen
26:06waving to the fans
26:07but that is it
26:08Verstappen
26:09out of the race
26:10Kimi Antonelli
26:11out of the race
26:12Carlos Sainz
26:13never got to start
26:14the race
26:14Lando Norris
26:15holding on to the lead
26:16Piastri with a superb start
26:18as those two
26:19come together
26:20to have a little debrief
26:21carry on
26:21on board
26:22with Max Verstappen
26:23so he's on the outside
26:24minding his own business
26:25on the outside
26:26of Lewis Hamilton
26:27there
26:27and whack
26:28gets the big hit
26:30from Mercedes
26:31I got hit
26:33like crazy
26:34idiots
26:35it's the end
26:37of a 31 race
26:39point streak
26:40for Max Verstappen
26:41here we are
26:42on board with Kimi
26:42Antonelli
26:43he knows
26:43he's got caught out
26:44he's got caught out
26:46by how early
26:47they've slowed down
26:48for that corner
26:49then he's gone
26:50oh there's a gap
26:51sorry about that
26:53lock the rear
26:54sorry
26:55yeah he's
26:58watch Kimi
26:59he's further back there
27:00bought to Leto
27:01and lost in the front
27:02he suddenly realised
27:03they're stopping earlier
27:04than he expected
27:05and just way
27:06too much speed
27:07locked up
27:08and
27:09yeah
27:10I think it's good
27:11we're going softer
27:12and softer
27:12on the compact
27:12oh that's going round
27:13he needed more grip
27:16Franco Colopinto
27:17and he's into the barriers
27:18as well
27:19and under pressure
27:20for his Alpine
27:22survival
27:23he has kicked up
27:24a storm of dust
27:25with a red flag
27:26and I would
27:27well if he can keep
27:28the car going
27:29which he seems to have done
27:30and get out of that gravel
27:32race control
27:33will be alright
27:33gets a massive round
27:34of applause
27:35but how much damage
27:37you can see a lot
27:38of vibration there
27:39on the rear wing
27:40and he's got to do
27:41a whole lap here
27:42to get back to the pits
27:43if the car's damage
27:44you're obliged to pull over
27:45what you don't want to do
27:47is go anywhere near
27:48the racing line
27:49down in turn one
27:50fairly and professionally
27:51but he's already
27:52having a moment
27:53coming out of stove
27:54let's see what happens here
27:56he's doing a lot
27:58of steering wheel movement
27:59and he hits the throttle
28:01on the paint
28:03and
28:04did he
28:05he did hit
28:06actually hit the wall
28:07but albeit quite gently
28:09did well to get it
28:10out of there
28:10but the etiquette
28:12if you can use a word
28:14like that in formula one
28:15is you must go
28:17and hit the brakes
28:18off the racing line
28:19get the gravel
28:20out of the car
28:21do not drive
28:22on the racing line
28:23oh
28:25there's the reaction
28:26from the crowd
28:27last time we commentated
28:28on a car doing that
28:29Brad Pitt was driving
28:31one of them
28:32I don't think
28:33that's a spoiler
28:33it's in the trailer
28:34yes
28:35and we've got a red flag
28:37he's pulled over
28:38at pit exit
28:38he's pulled over
28:39at pit exit
28:40so
28:41I think actually
28:42the whole thing
28:43vibrating
28:44which is probably
28:44almost certainly
28:45the flat spot
28:46we can see the one
28:47on the front tyre
28:47and the rears
28:49are not going to be
28:49a whole lot better
28:50but you just cannot
28:52look how much
28:53how it's hoovering up
28:54the gravel look
28:55into the side pods
28:56you cannot have
28:57that car dropping
28:58gravel through
28:59Beckett's
29:00or Stowe
29:01you know
29:01or Copse Corner
29:02turning in a 180
29:03190
29:03and somebody's left
29:05gravel all over the track
29:06so
29:07what it's meant
29:08is it's taken about
29:08another minute
29:09before we've got
29:10the red flag
29:11Franco Colopinto
29:12is out
29:13of qualifying
29:14and that's where
29:14he has stopped
