00:00Hi everyone. Welcome to my classroom. I'm Ms. Zoe and I'm so excited you're here. Today
00:11we are going to learn about patterns. We are going to learn about A-B unit patterns. We'll
00:19get a little more into that later, but our class has really been focusing on transparent,
00:25translucent and opaque items. Now transparent means if you shine a light through it, all
00:34the light passes through the item. So for instance, here's a glass. If I were to shine
00:42light through the glass, it just goes right through. So like your windows at home aren't
00:51transparent. Then we're talking about translucent. Translucent items are things that some light
01:01passes through. So here I have rainbow blocks in my classroom and here's a yellow rainbow
01:07block. So if I shine my light through, some of the light gets through. Now opaque things
01:18means no light gets through it. So if I were to shine light at this cardboard, it would
01:27not go through. You can't see it on the other end. So today we are going to use different
01:34color hard plastic cups. We have red, blue, green and yellow. We're going to talk about
01:48an A-B pattern. So a pattern is something that repeats itself. But how do you know what
01:53repeats itself? So when I say an A-B pattern, red would be A, yellow would be B. A B A B
02:06A B. Red would be A, yellow would be B. So that's an A-B pattern. So A and B repeat itself
02:15over and over. So today's activity with our translucent cups, we are going to create an
02:24A-B pattern with our cups. And then we are going to shine the flashlight to see if it
02:31really is translucent. And we can see the color pattern using the flashlight. All right.
02:38So I like I said, I have who's with me today? Renee. And we're going to work together making
02:44awesome patterns. So Renee, we've been talking about A-B patterns, right? So two colors,
02:50we're going to use two colors today. The red is A, the yellow is B. So A B, A B, A B, red,
02:58yellow, red, yellow, red, yellow. So the unit that repeats itself is red and yellow, right?
03:06So this is one unit. Can you break it up?
03:12All right, so there's one unit. Here's another unit. Can you break up another unit and put it
03:19there? So that's two units. And the last one is our third unit. So we have, can you count how many
03:30units we have? One, two, three. That's right. So it's an A-B pattern, meaning A and B repeat itself,
03:40red, yellow, red, yellow, red, yellow. So today, Renee, since we've been learning all about light
03:50and translucent light, we are going to use colored cups. Is that exciting? And flashlights.
03:58Okay, so why don't we come over to our special pattern board? So let's see if we can make that
04:04A-B red, yellow pattern with these cups. Go ahead.
04:12Yellow. Good. What comes next? What comes next in our pattern? Okay, put it down. Red.
04:21What comes after red? Yellow. Then,
04:33all right, one more.
04:36Yellow. Great. So now, just like our pattern stick,
04:42we have red, yellow, red, yellow, red, yellow. So now, let's see if this is really translucent.
04:48Let's see if some light comes by. Red, yellow, red, yellow, red. Okay, Renee, now can you create
04:58an A-B pattern with different colors? Green. Green. Then what comes next? Blue.
05:07Blue. And then what comes next? Green. Green.
05:19Green. Now, can you say the pattern? Green, blue, green, blue, green, blue.
05:28Great. So the unit is green and blue. Green and blue repeats itself. Green, blue, green, blue,
05:39green, blue. All right, everyone. So today, what great fun we had creating A-B patterns with light,
05:46right? Translucent cups, shining them through different colors and making A-B patterns,
05:53two-color patterns. Bye. Bye.
