00:00Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 live here on KMTV. I'm Arthur Noraro-Alan and this is the
00:26show for students by students. Each week we will explore different facets of
00:31student life across Kent with a range of topics and segments and this week
00:35we're going to be focusing on life after university which can be a worrying
00:40topic for some uni students but that's why we're here to help. First tonight Sam
00:45Cochrane went down to the University of Kent campus to the head of Careers and
00:49Employability to see what their advice is for students.
00:53As it comes to the end of the year, Employability and getting a job after
00:57university can be a very scary thing for students. We're here today to talk to
01:01James Corbyn who's the head of Employability at University of Kent about
01:05different services they offer. We offer a load of different services for students
01:08so starting from appointments which helps students decide what they want to do, to
01:13check applications for them or support with postgraduate study applications, right
01:19through to events and we run around a thousand events a year for students
01:22ranging from how to be an introvert in the workplace right through to how to
01:27secure your dream job and then we have a range of other schemes like the
01:31Employability points scheme and some other work experience programs as well.
01:35The Employability points scheme is a program where students do things that
01:39enhance your employability whether it's a part-time job, some volunteering or
01:43attending a workshop and we reward them with points. I think anyone that gets
01:46experience whether it's kind of learning something new or going out and doing
01:51something different you gain transferable skills and that's what employers are
01:54looking for and we know that when people do things like a placement year, a
01:58year-in program or they do an Employability points internship they come
02:02back more employable and many of them end up with jobs at the end of it. So we do a
02:05range of big events like careers fairs and we know that students want to meet
02:09employers on campus and so we bring hundreds of employers onto campus every
02:13year to meet students and to learn about career opportunities. We do workshops on how to
02:18find a job, how to secure a job and how to kind of behave in the workplace and we
02:23do that by listening to employers about what they think is missing from students
02:26but also from students in terms of what they want and we do that through
02:30formal feedback like surveys and things but also informal when we're chatting to
02:35them in our appointments. We then spoke to a number of different professors
02:39surrounding whether they thought universities did enough to help students
02:42with employability after university. I think the answer probably depends a little bit on the
02:48field you're working in and your own interests and expertise and what you're
02:53aiming for. If you're looking for something that requires a very specialized
02:57very in-depth knowledge then perhaps it might be the case that doing some further
03:01study or getting experience in a particular field is necessary. University is a
03:08step in the process. It is a gateway but you don't leave university as a
03:16fully rounded and experienced individual. I have to say something negative about
03:23students at the moment and that is and there's an expectation and if you turn up
03:27half the time you'll you'll leave the university with the skill set that equips
03:32you for employment and that is not always the case. I will say no. University is the
03:39entry point for students to learn these skills for getting a job or preparing
03:45themselves for real world but university is just a start point. I think more and more
03:52students are coming to university because they want a good job and I think
03:56universities have a duty to meet the needs of their students and so it's really
03:59important that students feel supported but also have access to the range of
04:03opportunities and for the university itself the outcomes whether graduates get
04:08jobs or not actually impacts their league table positioning so regardless of what you want to do it
04:13whether you want to do it for a good reason in helping students is really
04:16important to the survivor of the university. Sam Cochran, KMTV. Next tonight from
04:22employability advice to future aspirations we ask students on the Medway campus where
04:27they see themselves in the future and what their dream job would be. I'm studying to
04:33become a food scientist however this is not my dream job. My dream job is to be an
04:38an engineer in a Formula One racing team. I've always loved this sport I wanted to be an
04:45engineer an aerodynamic engineer but it didn't work so I studied food but yeah
04:53what my dream job would be an aerodynamic engineer in a Formula One team. I'm a student at
04:58the University of Greenwich studying chemical engineering and my dream job in the future is to be a chemical engineer.
05:01I would like to be a mathematician or have a PhD in math and now I'm doing like so
05:09I'm doing I'm doing a beauty ability but in it's in France in French in England I
05:16think it's a BSc it's like in two or three years. I'm studying material science right
05:21now and my dream job was always to be a researcher that's why I decided to pursue
05:25science in my life. Next tonight we wanted to hear more about the feelings both
05:31students and employers have about the post-grad job hunt so I'm joined here by
05:35final year student Tim Forster and KMTV's channel director Andy Richards. Thank you
05:41so much both for joining us. We'll start with you Tim. What jobs will you be looking
05:45for after uni both short-term and long-term? Well obviously you've got the
05:50summer first to kind of get through so some short-term jobs there I suppose kind of
05:54you know mainly retail but Keeney one thing that actually this year has told me is
05:59that I actually have a real interest in journalism so that's really kind of my
06:02next step looking at places like well like KMTV, like the BBC, Channel 4, things
06:07like you know places to kind of go ahead with an ITV Meridian. Thank you and Andy. Yes. Someone who
06:14employs a lot of a lot of journalists. I do I do. Tim was trying to ask for a job
06:18there by the way but carry on. What qualities do what qualities are employees
06:25looking for in university graduates especially in the journalism field? I
06:28think it's a really competitive market I think we're in a really interesting time
06:34in higher education where you guys have you know committed to doing a degree for
06:40three years in your cases four and I think what's changed a lot is that you
06:47guys want value for money right well you want you get to the end of your degree
06:50and not right thanks very much everyone I would like a job so what I'm really
06:55looking for is for is for people who have some practical skills they've applied
07:00themselves through university the fact you've done a degree has shown that you
07:04have something about you that you've managed to get through it but it's really
07:08showing what you could bring to the team and not being afraid to be confident
07:13and to show that you're ready for being in a professional environment and you're
07:17ready to to continue learning. That's very interesting Tim. Thank you. Do you feel
07:23prepared for the working world do you feel ready to to take on a lot of
07:26journalism? I'm of two minds about that I think firstly it is you know it's just had
07:31four years of fairly sheltered you know you're in university kind of you don't
07:35really have a focus on kind of work and things but then also I mean like I said
07:40I've done it I've done this year and that's really given me quite a lot of
07:43employability confidence if that makes sense kind of you know kind of being
07:48able to go ahead and sort of start applying to places and I feel I feel more
07:52professional going forward. Yeah I think apprenticeships are a really good way we
07:57start we do them now and it's again it's about adding to this term now
08:03lifelong learning right so this is what employers want to see and training has
08:08become far more in-depth once you get into a business and apprenticeships are a
08:14great way to start because you can show that you've got some some skills and
08:18capabilities to be able to to do the job but you're learning at the same time so I
08:22would recommend apprenticeships of graduates. Lovely and just to settle some of
08:27maybe Tim's nerves do you have any to-do's and not to-do's for job hunting? Don't wear a blue shirt no I would say it's it's it's
08:37looking at the skills it's looking at the skills that you've that you've got
08:42apply them and it's just having confidence when you're looking at those
08:46essentials and desirables it can be really overwhelming as a student when
08:50you see that you think well I could hit some essentials desirables I'm really
08:56worried that I haven't got much experience but it's applying it's
09:00applying yourself to those various different things on that application so
09:05when you're reading it back when you're reading your application back that you
09:08know that you've you've hit the criteria of what your your employer your future
09:12employer hopefully is looking for. Well I hope that settles some of your fears Tim
09:18thank you so much both of you for joining us that was very very interesting
09:23finally before we go we wanted to know how likely it is to end up in your dream
09:28job following university so we took to the Medway campus to ask some lecturers and
09:32staff if they're in their dream jobs like Andy is or if they're still deciding
09:36what to be when they grow up like Tim is. At the moment I am the GoTech
09:42administration coordinator which is a consortium between University of Greenwich
09:46University of Kent and Christchurch and the three FE colleges in the county helping
09:52facilitate the administration side and I also work part-time as a dressmaker my
09:59dream job is to have my own pre-loved clothes shop where people can bring items as
10:04well for alteration okay my dream job is what I'm doing this was my dream job this
10:09is my dream job to be a scientist to do research and do innovations so that has
10:18always been my dream job that's why I'm here and that will remain my dream job
10:23well my dream job would probably be working somewhere in the interface between
10:29working with people and working in science when I was very young I wanted to
10:34be a paleontologist what kid doesn't want to dig up a Tyrannosaurus Rex and in some ways
10:40that's a little bit of what I do now I'm not digging up any dinosaurs I'm an
10:44environmental scientist. At the moment I'm a pharmacist three days a week in the
10:50hospital and two days a week I'm a lecturer at the University but my dream job I think
10:57would be something involving food cooking or maybe a bakery or tea shop something
11:06like that. Well I always wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up and I think the
11:11window of opportunity for that has sadly closed. Well you've been watching Kent
