What was happening in the world one hundred years ago?

Number 5 – X-rays are still controversial today; in 1913, they were downright deadly for professionals operating them. Dr. Paulin Mery died from burns on his hand which resulted from his work with X-rays. The 53-year-old doctor had continued with his practice, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Number 4 – In what would be an unusual ruling today, a French court determined the father-in-law of Lisa Besnard was responsible for her financial support after the son left his wife and three children. Mrs Besnard requested the allowance her father-in-law previously paid be increased, and the court agreed, to the tune of $1200 a year.

Number 3 – A travel ad for Southern Pacific promoted the Sunset Route, a scenic railway route between New Orleans, Los Angeles and San Francisco. It read 'First you have a May day, then a rare day in June and finally the glorious, golden sunshine of early summer as you travel westward.'

Number 2 - This year, a video went viral after a man cracked open a massive chicken egg only to discover another egg inside. Same bizarre thing happened back then but the mechanism of how the word got out was primarily through the print medium. Not through millions of tweets or facebook likes.

Number 1 – Technology was evolving back then and the ability to re-produce art on prints in natural colors was a big deal. The New York Times reported on an event in which some of the greatest paintings were photographed on auto chrome plates and viewed by approximately 160 people at a color conference.
