EDIT CONTAINS 4:3 MATERIAL

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang sought to strengthen mutual trust and deepen cooperation with India on Monday (May 20) after a recent military standoff in the Himalayas threatened to derail relations between the two Asian giants, home to more than one third of the global population.

Li, who arrived in India on his maiden foreign trip after taking over as the Chinese premier, said he would strive to increase trust and build bridges for the future between the two neighbours whose relations have been fraught with mutual suspicion following a brief border war in 1962.

Bilateral trade between the two countries hit $73 billion in 2011, making China India's largest trade partner, but slipped to $66 billion last year. Still, the two countries remain committed to achieving a $100 billion bilateral trade by 2015.
