Why Do We Have Pinky Toes?

Learn why we have pinky toes.

We all need feet but why we do have pinky toes since they really don’t seem to do anything?

Well, way back when they actually did serve an important function. When humans were still in their primate stage, the feet were used to grab onto and hold things. The pinky toe was a big helper in that process.

Since evolving from that function, the foot has become an integral part of keeping one walking upright.

The foot structure consists of the hindfoot, midfoot and forefoot.

It’s the knuckles just below the big and pinky toes that with the heel form the tripod base necessary to maintain balance. Lose the pinky knuckle, and you’re in trouble.

The pinky toe itself, not so much. Running, skipping, and jumping could go on as usual if you were to suddenly find yourself without one or both.

Women who have trouble fitting into standard shoe sizes because their feet are too wide have increasingly been exploring the no-pinky-toe option.

Surgical procedures to resize the feet by removing the pinky are reportedly on the rise.
