Benefits and Dangers of Caffeine

Learn the benefits and dangers of coffee.

Caffeine is the most popular psychoactive drug in the world.

Somewhere around 80 percent of all the caffeine consumed in the world is from drinking coffee.

There are over 60 known plants that contain the caffeine compound in their fruit, leaves, or beans.

Caffeine affects people who use it by blocking the adenosine receptors in a person’s brain.

Adenosine is a chemical compound that makes people feel tired.

Studies have shown that caffeine helps people be more alert and productive.

One study claims that caffeine makes us more supportive in social situations, and another found that workers who consume caffeine have fewer accidents.

Stephen Braun, author of Buzz: The Science and Lore of Alcohol and Caffeine said: "We also know that caffeine is bad for people with anxiety. For them, it's likely to hurt productivity. But for people on the more depressive end, caffeine would improve productivity. The effect of the drug really depends on the brain into which it's being infused."
