A woman in Turkey is now pregnant after being the recipient of the first ever successful uterus transplant.
The 22-year-old woman has announced that she is 2 weeks pregnant following an in vitro fertilization procedure at Akdeniz Univeristy Hospital in Turkey.

She was born without a uterus and became the second woman in the world to undergo the transplant procedure from a deceased donor in August of 2011.

The first attempt at uterus transplant was a woman from Saudi Arabia in the year 2000, who had to have the organ removed due to health complications after 99 days.

About one in 5000 women in the world are born without a uterus, and this woman’s story is giving hope to other women who are unable to have their own children.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that around 7 point 3 million Americans are infertile.

There are other methods of increasing the chance of pregnancy including fertility drugs, surrogate parents, and artificial insemination.

Uterus transplant is only a temporary fix that allows the patient to have a child.
