Dancing Horses Entertain Grand Central Terminal Commuters

A herd of life-size, colorful horse figures dance and graze through Vanderbilt Hall in New York's Grand Central Terminal, as part of an art installation by Nick Cave.

More than 750 thousand visitors and commuters pass through New York's Grand Central Terminal on any given day.
But horses? - whoa now!
They aren't the real McCoy, of course, but 30 colorufl straw horses were brought to life on Monday (March 25), as part of artist Nick Cave's latest installation titled "Heard NY."
[Nick Cave, Creator of "Heard NY"]:
"We see the hustle and bustle of Grand Central station. People are moving as a herd would move, you know, trying to get from point A to point B on this train versus that train, so here, you know, this herd of horses is still, sort of, imitating that kind of motion and activity of movement within the space."
The event is part of Grand Central's centennial celebration, presented by Creative Time and the MTA Arts for Transit.

"It's a piece that will continue to evolve. It's a piece that speaks about a dream state, this imaginary sort of world, in which I would like for us to get back to within our day-to-day existence."
Two performers cloaked in colorful hay suits operated each horse, grazing through the terminal and breaking apart into a choreographed routine.

"It was magical and so beautiful, and vibrant and colorful, and energetic. It was really special."
Carl Sturkin also marveled at the performance.

"Really beautiful costumes and amazing how they move around in them. Can't quite figure out how they do it."
Performances, or "daily crossings" will take place in Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall at 11:00 a.m. (EDT) and 14:00 (EDT) daily from March 25 through March 31.
