Three rare chicks hatch at Bronx zoo.
A rare breed of bird has hatched at the Bronx Zoo in New York City.
Three maleo chicks emerged from their incubated eggs after approximately 70 days of being underneath river sand heated by electricity from below.
Maleo birds are endangered, and the Bronx Zoo is reportedly the only place you can see them except for their native island of Sulawesi in Indonesia.
They are classified as megapodes and require a source of heat other than their body to hatch their eggs like geothermal energy, or solar heat.
Some invasive animals as well as humans steal the eggs, which has caused a decline in their population.
Dr. Nancy Clum, the curator of ornithology at the Bronx Zoo said: “Almost half of all megapode species are threatened with extinction. The work we do with maleos both at the zoo and in the field can provide a model for conservation of other megapode species.”
Other rare animals have also been born in captivity, like the rare lion tailed macaque species that was recently born at the Delhi Zoo in India.
