Women's Brains Are Smaller But More Efficient

Men are said to have larger brains but women have a different advantage.

Women have smaller brains than men, but they use them more efficiently according to new research from neuroscientists at the University of California working together with a team of scientists in Madrid, Spain.

The results of their study showed that while the brains of women were typically about 8 percent smaller than men’s brains, they have an equal amount of intelligence.

Focusing their research on the hippocampus part of the brain which is typically smaller in females than males, they found that women used less energy and fewer brain cells to get the same results as their male counterparts, indicating their brains are more efficient.

In men the opposite was true, the larger the hippocampus, the more intelligent they were.

The study is based on data collected from subjects age 18 to 27, using 59 women and 45 men.

Professor Trevor Robbins from Cambridge University who was not involved in the study said: “The research suggests that, in women, the smaller the hippocampus, the better it works. The size of a structure doesn’t necessarily bear any relation to how well it performs.”

What do you think? Do men or women have an advantage over one another when it comes to intelligence?
