Here are 5 ways to curb food waste.

It’s a problem many of us deal with – throwing out too much food.

Here are 5 ways to curb food waste according to wholeliving.

Number 5 – It may sound contradictory but shopping more often eliminates the high amount being tossed in the trash can. One major shopping trip a week means an abundance of perishables will spoil before being given the chance to be eaten. More frequent visits will mean less food and money will be wasted.

Number 4 – Buying local produce means the fruits or veggies have a longer life span in your home. Many out of season produce ship from across the coast, meaning those perishables have already been sitting in transit, wasting away for at least a week before making it to the store aisle.

Number 3 – Instead of placing leftovers in Tupperware and stuffing them in the fridge, place the side dishes in separate freezer safe bags or wrap and freeze them. Nuts and fruits are perfect freezer companions, giving them a longer life. Make sure the thermostat is set to zero and you’re good to go.

Number 2 – Here’ s simple solution – organize your fridge. Keep leftovers in easy sight and grabbing range. Go through the refrigerator once a week to clean out and rearrange contents. This ensures perishables won’t be pushed toward the back and forgotten about.

Number 1 – It may seem a little extreme but seriously analyzing your trash can prevent wastage. Take a good look and try to document what’s getting thrown away. If leftovers are making it to the bin, adjust your habits and cook less. If a half eaten box of cookies is tossed away, buy a smaller package next time.
