Check out 15 souvenir buying mistakes.

Most travel experts would tell you that the key to a good trip is access to local, insider information. CNN recently covered 15 no-nos when it comes to buying souvenirs.

Number 15 - Stay away from anything that requires assembly or needs follow up care like maintenance or watering. A gift usually isn’t fun if it requires work.

Number 14 - Exotic booze is heavy to tote around, usually expensive and commonly a little nasty tasting to someone unfamiliar with it.

Number 13 - Another no no is stuffed animals. Most adults don’t need or want a three-foot tall Pooh bear taking up residence in their home.

Number 12 - Plastic, vibrant leis are not meant for everyday wear. Don’t buy one and avoid another souvenir mishap.

Number 11 - Bottles filled with rocks, sand or shells are way overplayed and a little boring in terms of gift giving.

Number 10 - Stay away from athletic team gear in foreign lands. It serves more as an insult to home team loving recipients.

Number 9 - Don’t give out leftover foreign coins or cash unless you want to be portrayed as cheap.

Number 8 - Memento home décor items can often be considered ugly back home. If you wouldn’t display it your house, it’s good to assume another person wouldn’t as well.

Number 7 – Shy away from ethnic clothing, after all a kimono usually isn’t considered a closet necessity in the United States.

Number 6 – A foreign language book sounds like a unique pick right?
Well not so much, more like uncreative and useless.

Number 5 – Corny key chains are an easy, cheap pick. Unfortunately that’s exactly how they come off from a recipient’s standpoint.

Number 4 - Steer clear of miniature monuments that are pointless and awkward.

Number 3 - Bags of flavored salt are cute…kind of. But they’re also far too common in terms of souvenirs and usually unappreciated.

Number 2 – Trite T-shirts anyone? You know those common ‘I heart’ this or that destination tops. Simply put, completely avoid.

Number 1 - Don’t buy gifts from the airport. Usually any offerings are overpriced and well…cheesy.
