Sinkhole Engulfs Two Buildings in Southern China

A giant sinkhole swallowed a group of buildings in southern China on Monday, prompting authorities to evacuate the surrounding area.
It happened in the city of Guangzhou in Guangdong province. State-run media says the area is near a construction site of a new underground train station.
The sinkhole first appeared on Monday afternoon, bringing down the first three-storey building. It was quite a spectacle for those nearby. Hours later, as they watched the rubble settle, the building next to it came crumbing down, falling into a hole more than 30 feet deep.
The building collapse cut off power lines and water pipes from surrounding residents.
Luckily the buildings were vacant and no one was injured.
Sinkholes are not uncommon in China. They have appeared in more than fifty cities across the country, including Beijing and Shanghai.
State-run People's Daily reports that an increase in the number of skyscrapers and poor drainage development are to blame for this phenomena.
