Man Loses House in Fire Then Billed for Water Used By Firefighters

A man who lost his home to a fire received a bill for fire officials' water usage.

Anyone who has experienced a house fire knows how shocking and devastating it can be.

For a couple in Eagle Mills, New York, there was an additional shock after fire officials put out their blaze.

On November 26th, dozens of firefighters were sent to the home. It took officials almost nine hours to put the flames out, and the house was completely destroyed.

Along with the devastation, homeowner Michael Pietro received a bill for $1,400 for the water that was used by fire officials.

Town officials charged him for ‘out-of-district water use’ as the residence is outside of the water restriction district created two years ago. The town supervisor notes it is ‘unfair to have taxpayers in Poestenkill foot the bill’.

Local fire officials think the bill is ridiculous as the residence’s water was easier to use due to its location.

The Eagle Mills fire department held a fundraising pancake breakfast for Pietro on December 2nd to help him foot the bill.

Who do you think should pay the bill?
