BURN: n., colloquial. An occurance during the 3-week period when this asteroid is in the perigee of tis orbital period. Previous probes had established this period in the asteroid's rotational cycle when proximity to this system's Blue Giant bombards its sruface with a lethal dosage of solar radiation.
The effect is to eradicate all matter, including prebiotic organic particles. For this reason it was assumed there was no life here.
