Doctors at Johns Hopkins hospital in Maryland have essentially built a new, functioning ear for a woman, from her arm.

Several years ago, the woman, named Sherrie Walters lost part of her left ear due to basal cell cancer, so with various surgeries, doctors began growing a new ear under her forearm using cartilage from her ribs. The performing reconstructive surgeon states “I thought of this exact strategy many years before and really was looking for the right patient to try it on”.

Last year, the ear could be seen underneath the skin on her arm. Then in March of 2012, it was moved to its permanent position taking the place of her original ear, and Doctors began working on cosmetically shaping and molding it to look like her ear.

A few years back, another patient underwent a similar procedure, but for a very different reason. The man, who is an Australian performer had a third ear surgically implanted on his arm, to serve as a form of art. The male claimed that it took him years to find a surgeon willing to perform the procedure.
