On Tuesday August 14, 2012, the United States Census Bureau announced what they are calling a reason to celebrate, when the population of the US reached 314,159,265. The first nine digits correlate to the value of mathematical symbol of the Greek letter pi, or “pi times 100 million.” Census Bureau chief demographer Howard Hogan was quoted as saying. "This is a once-in-many-generations event, so go out and celebrate this American pi."

Other celebrations of the number pi include Pi Day, which is an international holiday that falls on March 14. Pi Day can be celebrated by eating pie or watching the movie ‘Pi.’

Other math related holidays that are recognized include Odd Day, when all of the numbers in the written date are odd, or Square Root Day, which varies depending upon for the year, for example the last one was March third 2009, and the next one will be April fourth 2016. Square root day can be celebrated by eating root vegetable, or going out square dancing.
