Irish people are becoming less religious according to a recent survey.

Back in 2005, 69 percent of people in Ireland said they were religious, compared with only 47 percent today, according to the WIN-Gallup International network of opinion pollsters.

The reason for such a drastic change in beliefs might be blamed on the controversy in the church over a number of issues including clergy member’s sexual assault of alter boys.

The critics of the poll say that the wording of the survey may have been confusing and created inaccurate results.

The survey gave three choices and was conducted in 57 countries asking: “Irrespective of whether you attend a place of worship or not, would you say you are a religious person, not a religious person or a convinced atheist?”

The new study also shows that Ireland has joined the top 10 atheist countries with 10 percent of the those polled responding as “convinced atheists.”

What do you think? Are we as a society becoming less religious in general?
