A certain part of Yonkers Avenue in New York is experiencing an unusual phenomenon. People that park in a certain area are unable to use their car’s remote unlock buttons, or, if their vehicle has a keyless ignition the cars are unable to start. For about six months the problem has persisted, and it continues to cause problems for businesses like the local funeral home and nearby hardware store. A clerk at the hardware store said “We lose customers from this, they know they can’t come here unless they park blocks away and walk.” They noticed something was up when customers kept coming in to buy new batteries for their car remote controls. An expert has assessed the situation and determined that local radio wave signal interference is responsible. The only solution is to tow or move the cars out of the range of the interference. Other areas have experienced similar issues with car remotes and keyless vehicle ignition, including Maryland, and Nevada.

From 2006 to 2011, the number of keyless ignition car models rose from around 40 to just about 163. About half of the cars that are sold these days are equipped with remote ignition.
