Leaning Colosseum Worries Romans - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

The Colosseum in Rome, Italy is one the most famous landmarks on the planet. At almost two thousand years old, the historic amphitheater has withstood the ages. But now geologists from Rome have released a study that shows the true condition of the Colosseum, and it’s not a pretty picture. The place where gladiators used to fight to the death is leaning about 16 inches to one side, and there may be a break in the concrete structure. The constant traffic in the busy location of the Colosseum might be to blame. “Cars subject the monument to constant vibrations, and speed up its decay, while subway trains at least pass by with intervals of many minutes.” notes a research coordinator.

Inspite of the recent concerns, the Colosseum remains a momentous site. Initially recognized as the Flavian Amphitheater, the tiered oval structure was built in the 1st century and took a mere 8 to 10 years to complete. Today its ruins tell the tales of grand gladiator fights and showcase engineering techniques of a bygone era.
