There's good research that talks about when complex systems become corrupted, they have an almost impossible time re-imagining themselves, says Long. They can do business-as-usual plus a little recycling, but they can't fundamentally re-envision their work from the ground up, and that the way you can have wholesale transformation is to find or create a safe space outside the dominant system where something new can be created. So at BALLE, we've very focused on nurturing those safe spaces.
