Dr. David Samadi, leading prostate cancer surgeon, shares startling news that more patients may be undergoing angioplasty than warranted. One study found that 1 out of 7 angioplasty patients did not meet the criteria for the surgery and 1 out of 2 patients received an unnecessary stent. A separate study indicated that 90% of cardiac bypass surgeries were done appropriately, but only 36% of cardiac stents were warranted. Dr. Samadi encourage viewers to seek the advise of experienced heart specialists and to explore a full range of testing such as a stress test, calcium scoring test, and CT scan. Medication such as beta-blockers should also be considered prior to opting for surgery for angina or unstable heart disease.
