YouTube to become a cable company? [The Reel Web #41]

The F.C.C. is considering redefining "channels" in ways that will include online video sites like YouTube and Hulu. If this happens, then these video streaming sites will have the same access to content as cable networks do, thus forcing many TV shows and Hollywood content to be available for online viewing. This decision isn't final yet, but if YouTube and Hulu are seen as cable companies, it could have singificant implications on the future of web video.

We also talk about the drama surrounding "Save YouTube" this past week and how people are responding to losing subscribers and views. YouTube claims they haven't found a signle instance of an active user being unsubscribed from a channel and suggests that maybe people just need to change a setting on their home feed.

As part of this drama, Philip DrFranco, wants to offer a solution that he thinks could help smaller YouTubers by giving them publicity through a new YouTube network he's starting. His plan for the network sounds good to me, although it may be limited to only a certian genre of creators, but hopefully it will expand in the future.

QUESTION: What ideas do you have that could help "save YouTube?"
