Nearly four hundred inmates have escaped from a prison in north-west Pakistan.

According to a police official, the jail - in the town of Bannu - was attacked by Islamist militants armed with guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

One prisoner who escaped was reportedly on death row for being involved in an attempt to assassinate former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
