Greenpeace Ship Heads for Elgin Platform Gas Leak

Greenpeace campaigners are heading to the Elgin platform in the North Sea where a gas leak was reported last month.
A video distributed by Greenpeace showed campaigners near the platform taking water samples on Monday.
According to the organization's website, activists took water and air samples near the platform before returning to Cuxhaven.
The samples were due to be analyzed and laboratory results were expected in the next couple of weeks.
French oil major Total, the owner of the platform, said it was flying a team of crisis engineers to inspect the gas leak on Thursday with a view to eventually plugging the well.
Another, more expensive option being pursued in parallel is to dig two relief wells to the source of the gas at 4,000 meters depth, far below the sea bed.
The gas leak is spewing an estimated 200,000 cubic meters of natural gas from the evacuated platform into the air per day, forming a highly explosive gas cloud around the platform.
Total said the gas leak is costing it 2.5 million U.S. dollars a day.
