Early celebrations for Kurdish New Year were broken up by police in Turkey, in a sign of the growing tensions between the government and Turkey's Kurdish minority.

A large gathering in Diyabakir was broken up by police using water cannon, tear gas and batons.

The Kurdistan Workers Party, known as PKK, called for demonstrations ahead of Newroz, which begins on March 21.
