City Lights, a silent film written, directed and staring Charlie Chaplin, came out in 1931, two years after the advent of "talkies" was a massive success then and it is today a classic. It is widely recognized as Charles Chaplin's masterwork. It epitomizes Chaplin's blend of pathos and slapstick, grounding his physical comedy in real human feelings, taking the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster. The film has some of the most hilarious sequences Chaplin ever filmed, interspersed with what was undoubtedly his most touching story. Chaplin plays a tramp in love with a poor blind flower girl. She thinks he is rich because he is so generous. He is determined to not let her down even if it means getting a job. The film ending may very well be the most touching in film history.
