The side effects of Zoloft in women, specifically pregnant women, are among the drug’s most dangerous.

Zoloft in particular has been linked to numerous birth defects in children born to mothers who were taking the drug while pregnant. These include: clubbed foot; cleft lip/palate; delayed development; persistent pulmonary hypertension; gastrochisis; heart defects; skull defects; and brain/spinal cord defects.

Women who take Zoloft while pregnant also run the risk of delivering babies who have seizures, feeding difficulties, apnea, hypoglycemia, and more.

Moreover, Zoloft can cause premature birth or even miscarriage. And a child exposed to Zoloft in utero can experience withdrawal symptoms after birth.

Anyone who has been prescribed Zoloft—but in particular any woman who was taking Zoloft when she was or became pregnant—should speak to a doctor as soon as possible.
