What to Know for Vegan Thanksgiving: Nutrition

Vegan meal is not necessarily a healthy meal. It's going to be completely meat free, completely free of animal products. But there are a lot of vegetable ingredients that are not made from animals that can still be high in calories, because they can be high in natural sugars, high in natural fats. So you're not guaranteed that this is going to be a low calorie Thanksgiving meal.

One thing you can do to help is to offer to bring 1 or 2 of your own homemade vegan dishes. And that way, you can make sure that you have control over the calories, and something that's there. And then you have something you could eat maybe a little bit more of, and not as much of the higher calorie foods if they're served.

The other thing you can do is just be careful of your portions, and try to eat more whole foods. Like if they have vegetables there, try to eat a little bit more of those. If you eat the vegetables first, you'll feel more full, and not eat as much of the other food. So that's really your best bet, because you really will have no control over how many calories are in the foods. A lot of them may just mimic other traditional Thanksgiving foods. And they wouldn't necessarily be low in calories. They would just be free of animal products.
