Over 20 Chinese sailors are detained in South Korea today, after illegally fishing in South Korean territory. In 2010, Chinese sailors clashed with South Korean coastal patrol that left one Chinese dead, and strained relations between the two countries.

On Monday, South Korean officials said they arrested 31 Chinese fishermen for fishing in exclusively South Korean waters. Beijing authorities say they will monitor the situation.

The sailors were on three boats, spotted in South Korea's exclusive economic zone on Saturday. All of them were arrested, but 10 were released immediately after.

China's Foreign Ministry says it's paying attention to the case.

[Jiang Yu, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman]:
"We request that South Korea, while conducting law enforcement, do it in a civilized fashion, avoid violence and ensure the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese personnel. We will follow the developments closely."

In 2010, Chinese sailors clashed with a South Korean coastal patrol, killing one Chinese sailor, and leading to diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
