When choosing paint for your interior, the main thing you want to look for are VOCs, and you want no or low VOCs in your paint. Now what are VOCs? VOCs are Volatile Organic Compounds. And to simply describe VOCs, you know when you walk into a home and you have that new paint smell? Those are VOCs and those are bad. And if you have kids or pets, you do not want any VOCs, so look for no VOCs in your paint. And Benjamin Moore and AFM Safecoat have really beautiful colors in low or no VOC paints. Now obviously color is going to be a really important factor when you are selecting your paint. But color is not the only thing you want to look for. You also want to consider where you are going to be using the paint and what sheen or finish you want for where. Now on the walls, most of the time walls are not built perfectly straight, unfortunately, as much as we try to get our contractors to do that, does not always happen, so you want to use an eggshell or flat finish paint on your walls to hide those imperfections. Now on the ceiling, since it is a little more removed and you are not seeing all the imperfections, you can go with a flat paint. However, you may want to do something to add a little more interest on the ceiling, like us a Venetian plaster or do a really glossy finish to add some light and interest to your ceiling. So, any of the rules I am giving you are definitely meant to be broken. Now, what are the two dirtiest rooms in your house? In my house they are the kitchen and bathroom. So in the kitchen and bathroom we definitely make an exception as to what we put on the walls. And I like to use semi-gloss paint in kitchens and bathrooms because they are really easy to clean, but they do, again they show those imperfections. So semi-gloss paint in the kitchen and bathroom. Also on your doors and trim I like to use a semi-gloss or high gloss paint on doors and trim, because they are easy to clean. So when you go out there to select the paint for your home, look for no VOCs and make sure you are using the right finish and of course pick the most gorgeous color, and you will have a perfect paint selection.
