Differences Between Salsa and Merengue - part of the women's fitness video series by GeoBeats. In order to show you the differences between salsa and merengue, I would like to introduce my partner, Sarit. Salsa has a two-hand hold whereas we can rock back and forth. Here you see we could be in the night club, rocking out with each other, right. I could pass her from side to side, I can give her a little underarm turn, I can turn myself. I can turn her, I can go under her arm, take her body and keep moving. We can also play around, not even touching each other and just make moves like that, with spins and turns and that type of thing. And it is just really, really super fun. Now merengue, to show you the difference between merengue, merengue is a little more linear. It is inside actions usually done on, you know, sort of like a cruise ship party feel. Go back and forth, that type of thing. So the music is beautiful in merengue but the dance itself, it does not offer as many opportunities for movement as the salsa. You can move away from each other. There are some similarities as you can see in the way we are moving, right. And then of course, the music is a little bit similar as well, but the movements are a little more vast in your salsa. So those are the differences between salsa and merengue.
