Choosing Patterns for Sewing

Primer on Patterns for Sewing - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Be sure when you first start that you try to get as much information as possible. Not just the instructions that you are getting with your pattern. Go online. Look at instruction videos on YouTube. There are a number of sites online that are dedicated to reviewing patterns, how they fit, what the cut is, and how they end up looking. So you want to research those sites and you can get a better sense of what your pattern is going to look like. Look at the book section at your local bookstore. Most fabric stores have a book section that you can kind of browse through and feel out. What I usually warn people is that not all the of books are going to speak to you in the same way, and you have to kind of look at the tone of the book and see if the tone of the book is right for you. If you want something encyclopedic, you are going to have to wrestle with a bunch of extra information right off the bat. If you want something basic, you are going to tend to outgrow that quickly. So, whatever the tone you are looking for as far as instructional manuals go, and books, be sure that you are really feeling for it. Find the one that is right for you. Because that is what this is about, finding the right tool for you, not just finding every single tool.
