Basic Tenets of Buddhist Teachings - part of the women's fitness video series by GeoBeats. Buddha taught two things. He taught the cause of suffering and the end of suffering, and suffering is also translated as stress or discomfort or dissatisfaction. So, the basic teaching of Buddhism is: What causes our dissatisfaction, and how do we end that? And he laid out what is known as the Eightfold Path, which is a way of living that causes no harm to you or to others, and that exists to alleviate that discomfort of being a human in a human package. For millions of people all over the world, Buddhism is a religion. It is how they are raised. It is what they know. It is what they learn. People go to temple. They have developed traditions, which includes Buddhism. There are countries that are Buddhist. They have religious leaders. So, for many, many, many people around the world, it is a religion, but it does not have to be considered a religion. For me, it is not a religion. It is a way of life. It is a spiritual way of life that has enabled me to become more comfortable in my own skin, and not be so caught up in chasing pleasure and pushing away pain. The Buddha’s Eightfold Path is the basic principles of his teaching, and it is how to live in a way that does not cause harm to ourselves and others. And it is about practicing right speech, so that you make sure what you say is truthful and kind and appropriate. So, that is how you apply that in your daily life. Your intentions are wholesome and right and that you do not take what is not freely offered, another way of saying you do not steal, but you also practice generosity. So there are ways of being in the world that are supportive of this sense, of this cultivation of peace and equanimity in your life. That helps to alleviate suffering and stress and discomfort.
