Two miners have been found alive almost eight days after a coal mine collapsed in southern China. Seventy-one people were working in the mine when it collapsed and only 49 of them escaped. Three bodies have been found and 17 miners are still missing.

Rescuers pulled out two miners on Sunday who survived almost eight days trapped in a collapsed coal mine in southern China, state media reported.

The coalmine, located in Heshan City of Guangxi Province, collapsed on July 2nd as a result of torrential rainfall. According to state-run media Xinhua, rescue work had to be suspended at least once because of high levels of toxic gas.

A total of 71 people were working in the mine when it collapsed. Forty-nine miners managed to escape and at least three bodies have been recovered. Seventeen miners are still missing.

China's mines are the deadliest in the world due to lax safety standards and a push to feed the nation's economy. Last year 2,433 people died in coal mine accidents in China.
