A tip I have for travel photography is if you are going to shoot people, which I actually prefer to shoot, the best thing you can do to get a really effective people shot is to make sure that they are looking into the lens. But not with a necessarily like a cheesy post grin. What you want to do is try to capture them once again kind of within their environment in a candid way.
So the first thing I would say to do is you need to make sure that you can take their pictures, so as harder it may seem you need to ask them if you can take there pictures. If they say 'No', then its done. Obviously if they say 'Yes' now the fun begins.
You can actually then sit and take a bunch of pictures of them and you know maybe they will smile and so on and pose for the camera. That is probably not the pictures you want. What you want to be able to do is be really patient and stick around long enough, so that they kind of forget you were there. They go back to doing whatever it was thy were doing, they captured your attention and the pictures that you wanted to take in the first place. And then you probably start getting the pictures you want.
But you have to wait, wait, wait until like they look up and look directly into that lens. And once they make a connection with the lens you need to snap really quick because that is going to probably be the most powerful people shot that you will get.
