In the Ivory Coast city of Abidjan, heavy shooting has broken out between pro-Ouattara forces, and those loyal to incumbent Laurent Gbagbo. French troops are evacuating their nationals, and helping other civilians to safety.

The situation in Ivory Coast continues to deteriorate.

Heavy fighting has broken out between forces loyal to Laurent Gbagbo and those of his rival Alassane Ouattara.

French forces in Abidjan have moved to help foreigners to safety.

The St. Mary's hospital was caught in the crossfire as soldiers battled it out for control of the city, with rocket propelled grenades and automatic fire.

The number of people who have lost their lives in the heavy shelling over the last week remains unknown.

The beautiful city of Abidjan, once known as "the Paris of West Africa," now looks like a war zone.

According to a UN spokesman, French and UN helicopters on Sunday attacked heavy weapons belonging to troops loyal to Gbagbo.

A Reuters correspondent at the French military base about 15 kilometers from Gbagbo's residence, said he could hear loud explosions coming from the direction of the fighting.

He said four helicopters, two UN and two French, were carrying out operations.

There have also been reports of thick black smoke rising from the presidential residence where Gbagbo is located.

Forces loyal to Gbagbo stepped up a counter-attack on presidential claimant Alassane Ouattara on Saturday by firing on his hotel headquarters in Abidjan. The hotel is guarded by UN forces.

Lawyers for Ouattara have requested by letter that France and the UN eliminate Gbagbo's heavy weapons and militia, and bring him to justice.

Gbagbo has refused to cede power after losing last November’s election to Ouattara.
