Ahead of New Year's Eve, police in Mumbai are stepping up security in India's financial capital. It's to ensure safety of citizens from a possible militant attack.
Mumbai police are beefing up security amidst security concerns on Tuesday.
The city has been turned into a fortress, with police carrying out random checks across the city.
Several closed circuit television cameras have also been specially installed at busy traffic intersections and key locations in the city.
According to intelligence officials, four suspected militants belonging to the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba have entered Mumbai to carry out a major strike during Christmas and New Year festivities.
Police officials say officers will be out in full force on New Year's Eve.
[Rajnish Sethi, Joint Commissioner, Mumbai Police]:
"There is a terror alert which has already been issued. We also have the New Year Eve approaching. Now, for New Year Eve, specifically, the Mumbai Police will be out in full force. All officers, including senior officers and policemen will be on the road."
Police patrols and units have been deployed at various places across the city in the run-up to the New Year. The celebrations are attended by celebrities, film stars and icons living in India's entertainment and glamor capital.
The Commissioner of Mumbai Police assures all measures have been taken to ensure the safety of the city.
[Sanjeev Dayal, Commissioner, Mumbai Police]:
"It is true that on every big occasion, we have a general threat perception. Besides this, we receive inputs from the intelligence agencies on perceived threats. This year, we have a relatively high threat perception and we have taken all measures to ensure the safety of the city in the best way possible."
Security has also been tightened near the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace, the target of a terrorist attack in 2008.
