Chinese Fishing Boat Sinks off Peruvian Coast

Nineteen people aboard a Chinese fishing boat that sank off the coast or Peru have been rescued. Divers are searching for another four crew members thought to be trapped inside the vessel.

At least four people are missing on Wednesday after a fishing boat sunk off the Peruvian coast around 2 miles from the port of Callao.

The boat, Fuyuan 3, went down with 23 people on board, 19 of whom were rescued by the Peruvian Navy.

[Jose Calvo, Peruvian Navy Captain]:
"At 7:15 PM (0100 gmt) they told us there had been an accident on the Chinese fishing boat Fuyuan 3. It had flipped over. There was a patrol boat that was policing the area and went immediately to the rescue. There were 23 crew and 19 of those have been rescued."

It was not clear what caused the injuries to the men who were rushed to the hospital. Scuba divers were searching for the missing men while authorities looked into the causes of the incident.

The Peruvian Navy captain told local news station Channel 7 that the missing may have been trapped inside the boat.

"On the issue of the missing, right now we have scuba divers searching for these people, who may be inside the ship."
