Peruvians knit to remember their bloody past

In the heart of the Peruvian Andes, in the region of Ayacucho, women who lost husbands and sons in Peru's bitter internal conflict between Communist Shining Path rebels and the state in the 1980s and '90s are knitting in remembrance and protest. Each knitted message to their missing loved one forms part of a giant scarf. More than 1,000 people have contributed messages so far. The resulting work will go on exhibition in the US and Europe – though its debut show in Lima met with immediate controversy and was removed shortly after its opening, underscoring the tensions which still surround the country’s past.Duration: 02:18
