Light and durable - automobile designers are changing their approach to materials in components construction.Along with aluminum, plastics are increasingly popular when it comes to cutting down weight in vehicles. The days when it used only for interior paneling are long past. One high-tech plastic that is being employed in high-end car bodies is a carbon fiber composite that allows manufacturers to reduce the weight of a component by up to 70%. Swiss designer Rinspeed has already used it and other plastics in its UC electric concept car.
