The United Nations' top official in Ivory Coast has urged rival candidates to accept the outcome of Sunday's presidential election.

[Y.J. Choi, U.N. Mission to Ivory Coast Representative]: (French)
"The moment has come to safeguard the result. I have no doubt that the will of the Ivorian people, as expressed yesterday, will be respected.”

The election passed peacefully, with the voter turnout rate estimated at around 70%,

The election is historic, having been postponed 6 times since the 2002 – 2003 civil war.

All three main contenders say they are happy so far with the vote.

Ballot papers are now being transferred to the main city of Abidjan by U.N. peacekeepers. The peacekeepers will also be carrying out an audit of the counting process.

The United Nations has around 9,500 troops in Ivory Coast. They’ve been joining with local forces to secure the election process.

Ivory Coast is the world's top cocoa-grower, and it is hoped that a successful poll will rekindle investment.
